Fresh Gelato at Costco

Costco
4649 Morena Blvd
San Diego, CA 92117
(858) 490-5400

From the people who brought you churros over a footlong for $1, 1/4 pound hot dog and drink for $1.50, large frozen yogurt for $1.35, huge chicken caesar salad for $3.50, and much more food items at bargain prices, comes their newest food item: fresh made gelato!  Yes, Costco's food court now offers fresh made gelato.  Three large scoops and a waffle cone…for only $1.50!!! It's an amazing price, considering most ice cream shops charge about $1.50 for a waffle cone, and most gelato places charge between $3-5 for a small gelato.

**A quick update.  So I originally thought that this new item is available at quite a few Costcos, but upon further research, this menu item is only available at a few.  For now.  Apparently its in testing stage. Who would have thought that my local Costco on Morena Blvd would be one of the lucky ones chosen?  Regardless, I'm feeling quite happy it was.  Hopefully this item will soon make its way to other Costco, like most of the other food court items, especially seeing the response when I visited.  But as of now, I am only aware of the fresh gelato being offered in San Diego at the Morena Blvd location and somewhere in Woodinville, WA.

I heard that my local Costco was offering gelato now a few days before I planned on visiting Costco anyway.  So I was definitely on the lookout for this new food item.  What a great idea.  With the hot weather, gelato sounds perfect.  And the price is unbelievable.  Needless to say, the gelato was the most popular food item that day when I went shopping.  Costco offers three different flavors: mixed berry, pistachio and stracciatella.   This was an even bigger plus for me because my favorite gelato flavor is pistachio.

I ended up choosing two scoops of pistachio and one scoop of stracciatella. The consistency was smooth and thick, like gelato should be.  The flavors were pretty good.  The stracciatella was vanilla with little chocolate shavings.  The pistachio had a decent amount of pistachio flavor.  Not as rich as some places, but much better than others. All in all, pretty good gelato.

If you don't live near one of the confirmed locations, be on the lookout, as hopefully this item will be available at a Costco near you soon.

  1. You know when I first tried the gelato at Costco about a year ago, I was super excited. And I liked it the first few times. I no longer get it anymore because I do feel that it has a very strong artificial taste and it’s also too sweet for me. I agree that it’s not great quality, but I think the appeal is that it’s super cheap. Sometimes I can’t resist though because it’s so cheap. $1.50 for three very large scoops and a waffle cone.
I’m surprised about the nutrition info though. 286 seems almost like a misprint…perhaps if it includes the cone. I was just thinking, a normal half cup of haggen daaz is around 30 something carbs right? I’ll have to look for the nutrition info sometime.

  2. Not to be a downer, but I tried the gelato at the airport way Costco in Portland. It was “mediocre”. nothing special. Actually I didn’t think the pistachio tasted anything like pistachio’s, and it had a funny chemical flavor! The lady a head of me asked to see the nutrition information (she has gestational diabetes) and wanted to see how much she could have and stay below 15 grams of carbs. She didn’t even get to taste it. At a WHOPPING 286 grams of carbs per (3 scoop) serving (no one could tell us if this included the waffle cone or not, I’m certain not!), she and I both decided to pass. Their frozen yogurt soft serve with berries at only 86 grams of carbs per huge cup is a MUCH healthier and tastier option.

  3. Hi Carol- Let me know if you find it in those locations. I’m curious where else they are offering it.

  4. COOL! ‘ll have to check the ones in Poway and Scripps Poway to see if they sell gelato. Love pistachio flavored, too!

  5. Hi Gastronomer- I did some further investigating and unfortunately, it looks like this new menu item is only offered at two places: the Morena Blvd location in SD and Woodinville, WA. So no go on La Mesa branch- for now. But I’m thinking the gelato stand will soon be popping up at many Costco locations in the near future.

  6. Holy cow! Any chance they sell Gelato at the La Mesa branch?
