King Hawaiian Bakery & Restaurant

King Hawaiian Bakery & Restaurant has been on my to-do list of places to check out in LA for over a year now. It is home to the King Hawaiian rolls you can purchase at most supermarkets, but the location in Torrance also carries other baked goodies that are not available elsewhere.

When you enter, to your left is the restaurant and to your right is the bakery section. I went immediately for the bakery. I was amazed by all the different breads available other than the classic sweet rolls I’ve previously eaten. I spent quite a while browsing the bread selection before selecting a few: sweet dinner rolls, rainbow bread and coconut macadamia nut bread.

Here is the rainbow bread. I absolutely love the color and swirls of this bread. I thought this was a sweet bread with food coloring, but it is actually just regular bread. So it doesn’t taste great on its own, but makes a cool looking sandwich. I was so inspired I made a batch of rainbow cupcakes after I got home!

In addition to bread, they also sell cookies, pastries, donuts, and cakes. I couldn’t resist buying donuts. I have a huge weakness for them. I bought a couple of twisted glazed ones and cake ones, including a blueberry cake one. I thought the donuts were pretty good.

One of the things I was looking forward to most was the paradise cake, which is a chiffon cake made up of guava, passionfruit orange and lime. I originally was going to purchase a small paradise cake. But then I saw these small, undecorated bundts. The bundts were also chiffon cakes but undecorated. Since I wasn’t showing off the cake to guests and I don’t really care for all the icing and frosting, I thought I might as well buy the undecorated bundts, which were only a fraction of the price. (I believe they cost about $6.95 each whereas a small decorated paradise cake is $21.)

The cake was very light and fluffy. I love chiffon cakes. The only flavor on here I really liked though was the guava. I’m not too big of a fan of lime or orange.

  1. You should eat at the restaurant! Let me know next time you’re up in Torrance, I’ll meet you!

    • Yes next time I will let you know! We didn’t have time to hang out there, only a quick stop before our dinner plans, or else I would have contacted you and Rosa. Next time I’ll let you know!

  2. Hey Kirbie – King’s is one of the few places where you can find, what I call “old – style” cakes that are still popular back home in Hawaii. Stuff like Chantilly and Dobash….. not sure how they’ve stood up over the years. Used to eat at King’s quite often since it used to be across the street from my office when they still had their operations in Hawaii.

  3. I live like 15 mins north of this place and have never been. I didn’t realize they had such a large bakery!

I’ve been wanting to visit Donut Man but Glendora is far. 🙁

    • Oh yeah you should definitely pay it a visit. Lots of bread…and cake..and glazed donuts for your cravings! I really want visit Donut Man but it is so far. Nothing nearby. A bit detour to take..

  4. If you dine there, try the Luau Platter. It’s the best!

  5. I haven’t been to King’s in many years, but I remember how good everything in the bakery looked. Decisions, decisions! Do you remember if they had malasadas?

Did you go to the restaurant, too? I remember liking the food a lot, but again, it’s been many years since I’ve been there. The wait on a weekend morning was pretty crazy.

    • I didn’t see any malasadas when I looked. I didn’t eat at the restaurant as I had a big dinner planned and didn’t want to spoil my appetite. The menu looked good though.

  6. Their baked goods are hit and miss. Generally the cakes are good, but I had the worst brownie and some of their cookies are terrible!

    • Well it’s a good thing I didn’t get any cookies or brownies then. I’ve had the fruit tart here before and really liked it. And I enjoyed the cakes. Some of the other stuff didn’t look as appetizing.

  7. If you like donuts, you should go to Donut Man in Glendora. During strawberry season, they make a strawberry stuffed donut, and they have a peach one as well once peach season comes along. It’s quite indulgent, but definitely a treat for a donut lover.

    • I’ve heard of Donut Man! I really want to try it out. Glendora is a bit out of the way so I haven’t had a chance to go. Thanks for the rec!
