Pizza Ball Bites

Future Husband complained I made too many sweets last weekend and not enough savory items.  So this weekend I made him some pizza bites since he really loves pizza.

I originally was going to make them look like Totino’s pizza bites. But then I saw a recipe on Annie’s Eats, shaping them into balls and baking them together in a pie pan.  The idea of pulling apart pizza ball bites was really appealing.

One of these days I’ll try making my own pizza dough, but for these, I used premade Pillsbury pizza dough. (Does anyone else hate opening the “easy” Pillsbury dough cans like me? I always make Future Husband open them for me.) I took chunks of dough, flattened it, and then added some cheese and bites of pepperoni. Then I sealed the balls up and placed them into a pie dish.

Pizza Ball Bites

These bites taste really good dipped in a side of marinara sauce. They were so easy to make.

Pizza Bites

Servings: 14 pizza bites
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 35 minutes
Course: Appetizer
Cuisine: American
These savory bites are easy to make with store-bought dough. They’re like little bites of pizza.

Ingredients

  • 1 can Pillsbury pizza dough
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • About 14 slices pepperoni cut into small pieces
  • For topping: Olive oil Italian seasoning

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F. Lightly grease a 9-inch pie plate.
  • Divide the pizza dough into about 14 roughly equal sized pieces. Take one of the dough pieces, flatten it, and put shredded cheese and some pepperoni in the middle. Pull the edges of the dough around the fillings and pinch closed. Form into a ball and place seam-side down in the baking dish. Repeat with the remaining dough pieces.
  • Lightly brush the tops of the dough balls with olive oil. Sprinkle with Italian seasoning. Bake for 20 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown. Serve warm, with marina sauce.

  • Recipe adapted from Annie's Eats

  1. This sounds like such an easy and perfect appetizer for when you’re just too busy to wait for homemade dough! Love this idea! =)

  2. These look so good! Great appetizers for a get-together. I think you have a stand mixer if I recall correctly so making your own pizza dough would be easy. It’s just the wait time for the dough to rise but you can do it in an hour with a little help from your oven’s light to speed things up a bit.

Haha, I hate those dough cans ever since I was a kid! They scare me because I never know when they would pop. My mom used to use a knife to cut between the seam to open it but the pop would still scare me. I try to carefully unwrap it and then slam it against the edge of the counter to open it. Doesn’t always work.

    • I make fiance open the cans but he’s scared of the pop too! Yup I have a stand mixer, so I know it shouldn’t be too hard. I just hate wait time.

  3. I was always fascinated at how the Pillsbury can would unwind to release all that dough. What about using Trader Joe’s pizza dough from the deli section?

  4. I think I may try these using the mini pepperoni that you can buy now. 🙂 Thanks for the recipe!

  5. I’m loving all the pizza bites recipes. Now if only I’d make them for Husband since he’s a pizza fiend. 😉

I HATE opening the popping cans for Pillsbury! The sudden *POP* scares me… LOL!

  6. I’ve baked pizza dough into rolls before, and they were perfect for dipping in marinara; but I’ve never stuffed them! Good idea—I think my future husband would love them, too. 😉

And yes, I’m terrified of opening dough cans. Which is one reason why I prefer making my own pizza dough! It’s very easy, and tastier as well!

  7. I’m with you, sometimes you just don’t have the time to make your own dough. These look super yummy and quick to make. I could possibly eat a whole dish of this!

    • These are easy to make and a great, quick way to satisfy some pizza cravings. I probably could eat a whole dish too…they are deceptively small.
