Kirbie's Cravings

Que Huong

Last week, FH and I were lucky enough to have dinner with Kirk of mmm-yoso, who generously made time in his super busy work schedule to spend an evening with us.

We’ve been to Que Huong once before, but didn’t really know what we were doing on our first visit as our knowledge of Vietnamese cuisine is pretty limited.

Last time we ate with Kirk, we had a wonderful meal at Sushi Yaro which I didn’t document. I’ve regretted it ever since because on subsequent visits I couldn’t remember everything he had ordered. So this time, I made sure to snap a few quick pictures so I can remember what to order next time.

We left the ordering to Kirk since he’s very familiar with Que Huong and their best dishes. Once again, we experienced some wonderful food and Kirk was so knowledgeable about each of the dishes and how to eat them. Hopefully I got the names right on each of the dishes

Seasoned Escargot in coconut juice

I haven’t really eaten snails before still in their shell. Kirk demonstrated the technique for sucking these out of the shell. There really wasn’t much meat in each one but the sauce was really good. It was a coconut curry sauce that I really enjoyed with rice.

Papaya salad

I believe this was a papaya salad though I don’t see it on the menu. The strips of fruit were mixed with a shrimp paste sauce that I really liked. It was also mixed with chili peppers.
Chicken wings in tamarind sauce

I know these were wings, not sure which sauce. I remember it being slightly sweet so I’m guessing tamarind. We loved the wings last time we were here and loved them again. Nice and crispy on the outside and the different sauce variations are a welcome relief from the usual wing offerings.

Grilled wild boar.  The boar was served with rice paper and a plate full of lettuce, mint, cucumbers, pickled carrots and pineapple, and some rice noodles, allowing you to create your own wrap. It was pretty fun and I thought the bed of greens and fruit were a good accompaniment with the boar meat.  But it was also quite filling to eat it as a roll.

Catfish in claypot

The fish was served with a caramelized sauce I really liked

There was a lot of food and we thoroughly enjoyed everything as well as the company. You can read the menu from my first post. Thank again Kirk for introducing us to so many great dishes and taking the time out of your busy schedule to have dinner with us!

CC of Pink Candles at Ridgemont High has also been here a few times and you can read her posts here, here, here, here, here and here.

  1. Hey Kirbie – Thanks so much for the kind words, you’re so very sweet! It’s always a pleasure chatting (and eating) with the both of you!

  2. Hi Kirbie,

I’m new to your blog but have really enjoyed reading all the fantastic reviews and recipe posts. It’s a really great read and I feel as if I’ve been able to visit all these great haunts with you.

Never been to America and would love to but live on the other side of the world. It’s on the Bucket List though.

It’s been fantastic visiting all these places and tastes through your blog. I seriously could plan my Great American Foodie Road Trip with your blog as guide. And I really will…

Love this post about this Vietnamese restaurant and liked that it wasn’t the run-of-the-mill fare that you focused on like spring rolls and beef noodles.

Thanks for being so down-to-earth and honest in your opinions without being offensive.

And I just love, love, love that you have so many posts on baked goods. Cookies, cakes….yum!

    Really. Great. Blog!!!

    • Hi Judie! Welcome to my blog and thank you for your nice comments. I’m so glad to hear you enjoy reading through my posts and hopefully you will continue to.

  3. hi kirbie

  4. hi kirbie – que huong is one of my favorite vietnamese places. it’s our “go to” place when taking friends out for vietnamese food. the owner is super nice too! we love the fish sauce wings, as well as the banana blossom salad and pork/shrimp with jackfruit salad. the quail dish and caramel prawns are also a favorite. i have to also confess that it was kirk’s posts on que huong that made us try it (i was curious about their banh xeo). glad you enjoyed your experience. kirk is a very cool guy!

    • Hi CC- I wanted to link to your posts also. I know I’ve seen them. But I’m not allowed to search you site for old posts so I couldn’t pull up any. I tried searching by archives, but only scanned a few months and then stopped. If you have the links handy I can add them to this post. I loved everything here. My siblings want me to take them here so we’ll be back soon!

  5. It’s always nice to dine with someone who knows what to order. Dishes look great. I’ll have to try this place.
