Even though it’s just me and Mr. K, we love going to Costco. In addition to free samples, buying fruit and stocking up on baking supplies, I am always looking for new snacks to try. Here are our latest obsessions of the month:
San Pellegrino Blood Orange
About a year ago, we went to a friend’s house and he served us Lemon and Orange flavored San Pellegrino sodas. I really loved the cans, which come with a little wrapper on top to protect the cans from getting dusty.
We’ve seen the drinks at Costco before but they were on sale last month, so we decided to get some. We found a blood orange flavor and chose to get that instead of the lemon ones. I’ve been a little obsessed with blood orange sodas, and so I really enjoyed these.
GH Cretors Chicago Mix Popcorn
A few months ago, I was sent a sampler pack of GH Cretors popcorn. My favorites were the kettle corn and Chicago Mix. What I liked about the kettle corn is that it actually tasted like fresh popped kettle corn you can get at the fair or farmers markets. A lot of the prepackaged kettle corn popcorn I’ve had tend to taste weird, missing that crunchy sugar crust that develops over the popcorn.
My second favorite was the Chicago Mix, a combination of cheddar and caramel popcorn, a sweet and salty duo which I first fell in love with when my sister brought me back some as a souvenir from her trip to Chicago. I’ve always found caramel corn too sweet on its own, but the cheddar popcorn really balances it out. After devouring my sample bag, I was really excited to see it offered at Costco, so I was able to replenish my supple. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able find the kettle corn anywhere locally.
Philippine Dried Young Coconut
From the same brand famous for their dried mangos, they also make dried young coconut. I had stumbled across it on Amazon, but the price was quite high. So when I saw it on my last Costco trip, I immediately grabbed a bag. Coconut has become so popular in its many different forms these last few years. First coconut water, then roasted coconut chips, and now dried coconut flesh.
My favorite part of eating a young coconut is the flesh. It’s a task to eat though. First, you have to be able to break off a portion of the top shell which is hard if you don’t have the right equipment. Then you have to pry the flesh off of the shell. The dried young coconut gives you all the yummy coconut without the work. I just wish that it wasn’t covered in sugar, as that makes this more of an indulgence rather than a healthy snack.
Island Way Sorbets
This isn’t a new item, but it’s one we indulge in every summer. I love that the sorbets are served in real fruit shells, inspiring some of my sorbet in fruit shell recipes. The sorbets are also super creamy (but I realized that is because they actually do use cream in their sorbets). I always think they are a bit expensive, at more than a dollar a piece, but we always buy a box every summer- I just can’t resist.
