Matcha Chocolates

I love anything matcha green tea flavored, especially matcha chocolates.

I’ve been really surprised at the prices for Japanese green tea chocolates, especially when it’s easy to make your own.

Recently, I decided to try making my own, melting some high quality white chocolate and adding some high quality matcha powder. Still cheaper than buying it and tasted the same to me.

You can make them into different shapes, gift them, make them like Reese’s cups and fill them. I did a few with strawberry jam but I didn’t have a chance to photograph the inside.

Matcha Chocolates

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Course: Dessert
Cuisine: Japanese
Japanese green tea chocolates are pretty expensive so I like to make them myself. You only need two ingredients and they are easy to do!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup high quality white chocolate chopped
  • 2 tsp high quality matcha powder

Instructions

  • Melt chocolate in the microwave, at 30-second intervals, stirring after each heat, until chocolate is smooth. You can also melt in a double boiler.
  • Add in matcha powder and stir until uniform in color and no matcha powder streaks remain. Pour into candy molds and refrigerate until set. Let chocolates come to room temperature before eating.

  1. Thank you! I will make matcha chips cookies with this ?

  2. What type of matcha do you use? There’s no Nijiya where I live so where can I go and what should I buy?

  3. Just wanted to let you know that I made these and they were a hit!  So delicious and can really taste the matcha flavor!  Now I’m off to make a double batch!  Thanks for the super simple and awesome recipe!

  4. They look amazing. How long did you refrigerate them for?

  5. This looks amaaaazing! 🙂

  6. What if I don’t have a microwave or double boiler to melt the white chocolate? Can I boil whipping cream and matcha first, then add the chocolate when the mix is still warm?

    • that likely will not work. You can sort of make your own double boiler. Put another pot or pan on top of a pot with boiling water and put the chocolate in the top one. If you google search “do it yourself double boilers” there should be a lot of articles and images

  7. Where do you get your matcha? I’ve found best price:quality at Nijiya and recently, HMart. (recipe looks good, I’m diabetic and need to really watch my carb intake; would have to find teensy molds…and I just might)

    • I buy the gold canister maeda-en from nijiya. It’s usually around $9 and the color is really nice. I get my candy molds from amazon
