Kirbie's Cravings

Yu’s Garden

We recently went for a revisit to Yu’s Garden. While it’s not the best Chinese food in San Diego, the 100+ choices and cheap prices (just about everything is under $9) have us coming back every once in a while.

You can do a combination plate from their already prepared dishes which sit at the front of the restaurant and/or you can also order off of the menu. We usually do a combination of both.

Green beans and tripe

We started with a combination plate of green beans and marinated tripe. The green beans were surprisingly good. Crisp, green, with a savory garlic sauce. I’d definitely get this one again. The tripe was okay, a bit too soft and mushy.

Seafood Noodle Soup

This was a huge disappointment. The broth was bland, the seafood ingredients scarce. Yes it’s only $5.99, but I feel like I could have easily thrown together various ingredients from my kitchen and come up with something a million times better.

Crispy Pan Fried Noodles

Mr. K loves crispy pan fried noodles, so we decided to give it a shot. I didn’t have high expectations, but this was surprisingly decent, especially at $5.99. I prefer the thinner egg noodles, but the noodles were nice and crispy and there was a good amount of gravy and toppings.

Sauteed Intestines with Basil

I couldn’t resist. I really enjoy pork intestine and they are pain to prepare so I like to order it when I go out. This basil version had flavors similar to their three cup chicken and I really liked the flavor of the fried basil.

Milk tea

Of course we always get the milk tea because it’s buy 1 get 1 free (all the drinks under the milk tea and iced flavored tea sections are). The tapioca pearls are a bit too mushy, but the milk tea tastes pretty good and it ends up being only $1.50 a cup.

  1. “it’s not the best Chinese food in San Diego” well said!

However, I kept finding myself going back, I don’t know why 🙁 Their ???  (Lion head) dish is not bad

    • it’s the prices! Most of the dishes are okay, not bad to the point that it’s inedible or you wouldnt order it again. Some of the prices are so cheap, it’s much cheaper to order it there then make it yourself. Oh i had the lion’s head before and I agree, it’s not bad. hehe

  2. It looks like you went early as all the ‘buffet’ items looked stuffed and plentiful! I’ve been here so many times but still haven’t found a menu item that’s blown me away. My favorite buffet items are the tofu noodles and the sliced garlic pork. Your pictures of the food are truly breathtaking.

    • aw, thanks. the photos of the buffet area are actually from a previous visit because i forgot to take one from this visit. but actually it was really full because we went early. i try to avoid that parking lot, so i only venture in early, like around 11ish, when it’s not full. the green beans were surprisingly really good. we’d def get those again.
