Pizza Rev

Pizza Rev is the latest craft-your-own personal pizza chain to join the San Diego customized fast-casual pizza scene. Last week, they opened their first San Diego location in Scripps Ranch and will be opening a second one in Carmel Valley this week.

The concept here is similar to all the others. You can choose from pre-designed pies or create your own customized 11-inch pie with unlimited toppings for $8.25. The thin-crust pizzas are quickly fired in the oven and ready in minutes. Even though it seems like the San Diego market has become saturated with these pizza chains, I still get excited when each new one opens.

Pizza Rev offers more than 20 different toppings, a variety of cheeeses, and four different pizza sauces including a white sauce or BBQ sauce (most of the chains only offer a traditional red sauce). Another unique feature is that they also offer several local craft beers on tap. During their opening week, they had a lot of promotions going on, making it quite crowded, so I didn’t take too many photos.

White Sauce, Italian Cheese, fennel sausage, beef meatballs, grilled chicken, Italian sausage, mushroom, bell peppers, spinach, basil

This was my creation. I really enjoyed the creamy, garlicky white sauce which worked great as a pizza base. While all these chains have a similar concept and toppings, where they differ the most is the crust, since every chain develops their own crust recipe, which is cooked in their own custom ovens. The crust at PizzaRev is very thin and extra crispy, almost like a cracker. I really enjoyed the texture and thought it held up well even with all the sauce, cheese and toppings.

Red Sauce, Italian cheese, fennel sausage, Italian sausage, crispy bacon, bell peppers, basil

This was Mr. K’s creation. I liked the zesty tomato sauce, but actually preferred my white sauce base. Mr. K preferred the red sauce so I guess we each chose the right customizations.

Overall, we really enjoyed the pizzas here. It’s definitely one of my favorites of these customized pizza chains and I can’t wait to come back. Things moved a little slowly but I think it was mainly because of the large crowds from all the free pizza promotions during opening week. We’ll check back in again after the crowds have died down and hopefully the wait won’t be as long. If you’re curious as to the other offerings in San Diego, you can read the round-up I wrote last year for Eater on the fast-casual pizza scene in SD.
