Lasagna Garlic Bread Bowl Dip

This cheesy lasagna dip combines beef, tomato, sauce, and mozzarella cheese for a fun twist on lasagna. Serve it with toasted bread on the side for a great snack for parties and game days.

A few months ago, I came across this video for a Lasagna Garlic Bread Bowl. It looked absolutely amazing.

The recipe basically turned a bread bowl into garlic bread and then made lasagna inside it, filling it with meat, sauce, lasagna noodles, and cheese. I knew I had to try making a version soon. The lasagna noodles plus bread seemed a little too heavy, so I made my version without the lasagna noodles. Instead, mine is more of a lasagna dip.

I also made additional garlic bread cubes with the bread I carved out of the bowl so that you can dip the garlic bread into the lasagna bowl.

The house smelled so wonderful when this was baking in the oven. And the flavor is great too. It basically takes the classic pasta dish and turns it into a fun lasagna dip recipe!

Ingredients

  • Sourdough bread bowl – I use one that is about 6 ounces
  • Ground beef – You can also use ground turkey
  • Canned tomato sauce
  • Chopped white onions
  • Salt and black pepper
  • Sliced fresh mozzarella cheese
  • Butter
  • Olive oil
  • Minced garlic cloves
  • Finely chopped parsley

How to Make It

Slice about 1″ off the top of the bread and then hollow out the inside. Leave about a 1/2″ of bread around the edges. Slice the bread you pulled out into pieces to use for dipping. You can also slice the portion you cut off the top.

Combine the garlic, oil, and butter in a small microwave-safe bowl. Heat the mixture in the microwave for about one minute or until the garlic is softened. Brush the mixture on the inside of the bread bowl. I also like to coat the bread pieces. Sprinkle the parsley over the garlic butter mixture.

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the beef (or turkey) and onions and cook them until the meat is browned. Stir in half of the tomato sauce and season with salt and pepper.

Place the bread bowl on a baking sheet (or in a baking dish) lined with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. Place a thin layer of cheese inside the bowl, and then add half of the meat. Top the meat with the rest of the tomato sauce, followed by more cheese. Add the rest of the meat mixture and top it with the rest of the cheese.

Place the sliced pieces of bread on the sheet pan and then bake the lasagna dip for 10 to 12 minutes at 375°F or until the cheese is melted and the bread is toasted. At this point, remove the bread pieces and leave the bread bowl in the oven.

Turn the broiler to low and place the lasagna bread bowl on a lower rack in the oven. Broil it for two to three minutes or until the cheese bubbles and starts to turn golden brown in spots.

Garnish the dip with chopped parsley before serving with the toasted bread pieces for dipping.

Variations

Cheese: You can add some grated Parmesan cheese or swap half of the mozzarella cheese for a layer of ricotta cheese which is often used to make traditional lasagna.

Sauce: You can replace the canned tomato sauce with your favorite jarred marinara sauce.

Meat: Crumbled cooked Italian sausage or ground pork would also work in this recipe. If the meat has a lot of excess fat, I would drain most of it off after cooking it before adding the sauce.

Dried Herbs: Add some dried herbs like Italian seasoning or dried oregano when you brown the meat.

Fresh Herbs: Or add chopped herbs like thyme or fresh basil.

This garlic bread bowl has the best of lasagna with sauce, meat, and lots of melted cheese and is served as a dip.

Ingredients

  • 6 oz sourdough bread bowl
  • 4 oz ground beef (see note)
  • 8 oz can tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup chopped white onions
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • oz sliced fresh mozzarella cheese
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 4 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 tsp finely chopped parsley

Instructions

  • Slice off the top of the bread bowl, about 1 inch down from the top. Hollow the inside of the bread bowl, leaving about 1/2 inch around the sides and bottom. Slice the bread bowl lid and hollowed out bread portions into large rectangles to be used for dipping later.
  • In a small bowl, add garlic, olive oil, and butter. Heat in the microwave for about 1 minute (make sure to cover bowl before heating) until the garlic is cooked and garlic flavor is infused with the oils. Brush the insides of the garlic bread bowl with the garlic butter mixture. Brush the surface of the bread rectangles with garlic as well. Sprinkle parsley over buttered surfaces.
  • In a large pan over medium-high heat on the stove top, cook ground beef (or turkey) and onions. Stir in half of the tomato sauce. Add salt and pepper as needed.
  • Preheat oven to 375°F. Place bread bowl onto a baking pan lined with parchment paper or silicone baking mat. Add a thin layer of cheese inside the bread bowl. Add in half of the meat. Top with half of the remaining tomato sauce. Add another layer of cheese. Add the rest of the meat and then sauce. Add another layer of cheese, covering the entire surface of the bread bowl. Place bread rectangles onto baking sheet.
  • Bake for about 10-12 minutes, or until cheese is melted and bread is toasted. Remove bread rectangles from oven. Turn oven to low broil and place bread bowl on a shelf in the lower section of the oven. Broil for about 2-3 minutes or until surface of cheese  begins to bubble and blister. Remove from oven. Sprinkle additional parsley for garnish if desired. Serve while hot.

Notes

For a lighter version, you can use ground turkey instead of the beef.
