So I'm jumping around a bit on my eating trip from this last weekend.  I haven't had as much time as I would like to write some of my posts, so I'm writing this quick post for now.  After dinner in Arcadia, I noticed a sign for J.J. Bakery and wondered if it was related to the JJ Bakery in Irvine that I usually go to.

Well, it turns out that this JJ Bakery is related to the other JJ Bakery chain, which also has a location in Irvine.  I've been to the Irvine location once.  The Irvine location is kind of small.  The egg tarts and breads are slightly more expensive than than the JJ Bakery I frequent so I haven't been back.  This location in Arcadia is bigger and prettier and offers similar items.

One thing that makes this JJ Bakery chain stand out from other chinese bakeries are the cakes.  The cakes are really pretty and many of them are designed with fondant, the substance that makes gorgeous cakes like the ones you see on Food Network, but a substance that isn't exactly tasty in my opinion.  This is the first chinese bakery I've seen that uses the fondant.  Their cakes are pretty tasty, though I've only tried the small individual slices of some.

On this occasion I chose this beautiful chocolate coffee layer cake.  I love the two tower layer design.  I don't think I've ever seen it on an individual sized cake piece.

The cake was pretty tasty.  Soft and moist and not too sweet.

JJ Bakery also sells these giant mochi with fresh filling.

I chose a mango flavored one.  Inside is fresh mango pieces along with a mango flavored whipped cream substance.  I first tried one of these in Taiwan.  JJ Bakery is the only other place I've seen these.  I'm not a particular fan of these mochi.  There is nothing wrong with JJ Bakery's version; I just don't like them as much in general.  I like my mochi to be mainly about the chewy outside layer.  These giant mochi really focus on the filling.  It's a lot of filling and just a tiny, thin chewy outside layer that reminds me a lot of the fondant.

Finally, I also picked up some green tea petal cookies.

I wasn't very impressed with the "petal" shape.  But I loved the flavor of the cookies.  They tasted a lot like danish cookies, with a green tea flavor.

  1. I love JJ’s! Glad you enjoyed it too. I’ve never had a cake that I didn’t like.

  2. Hi m- I was really drawn to the cake because it did look like a full size cake! The bottom layer was about 2 inches by 2 inches and the top one was about 1 inch by 1 inch.

  3. I love the design on the two layer individual cake – how large were the layers? I would have guessed that that was a full size cake from your photo!

  4. It was quite tasty! If you are ever in the area..you should make a stop!

  5. Oh. My. That cake looks divine. If it tastes half as good as it looks, watch out! I may have to fly out to satisfy this sudden craving. 🙂
    Best,
