Nutella Lava Cake

Lava cakes are one of our favorite desserts and they are so easy to make at home. These Nutella lave cakes are rich and decadent. Each chocolate cake has a molten Nutella center that oozes out when you cut into the cake. They are great for entertaining or anytime you want a rich dessert to treat yourself.

I’ve mentioned this before but the BF loves chocolate lava cakes. I do too. Piping hot, oozing rich chocolate cake. What’s not to love?

I’ve been wanting to try a Nutella lava cake for a while. The original recipe I found had a few too many steps and eggs for my liking. So instead, I decided to play around with a lava cake recipe I have been using for a long time and added some Nutella to it.

I didn’t think it was possible to improve on the original, but a chocolate lava cake with Nutella is even better.

Lava Cake Recipe Tips

  • I like to use a muffin pan to make these lava cakes. This recipe makes six mini cakes. They are rich and decadent so a little goes a long way.
  • The cake is made with melted chocolate, butter, sugar, eggs, and flour. You can combine all of the ingredients in one bowl.
  • Once the batter is made, I fill each muffin mold about halfway and top each with a tablespoon of Nutella.

  • As the cakes bake, the cake part will cover up the Nutella so when they’re done each one has a creamy molten lava center.
  • You only have to bake the cakes for about 10 minutes. You know they are done when the sides of the cake have pulled away from the sides of the pan, but the center of the cakes are still gooey.
  • To remove the cakes, I like to run a knife around the outside to loosen each cake from the pan. To serve, turn the cakes over so the bottoms are now the top of the cake.
  • Serve these Nutella lava cake warm.

Ideas for Garnishes

We pretty much devour these Nutella lava cakes as they are, but you can dress up your lava cakes which is nice for fancy dinner and entertaining.

  • Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The combination of the cold ice cream with the warm cake is so delicious.
  • A drizzle of chocolate syrup or salted caramel sauce would be great, too!
  • Garnish your cakes with fresh fruit – sliced strawberries or raspberries are good choices.
  • Or add a dollop of whipped cream topped with some grated chocolate.
  • A dusting of powdered sugar is an easy way to decorate your cakes, too.

Servings: 6 cakes
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 12 minutes
Total Time: 27 minutes
Course: Dessert
Cuisine: American
These cakes not only taste great but are pretty simple to make.

Ingredients

  • 4 oz semisweet chocolate chopped
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 6 tbsp Nutella

Instructions

  • Melt chocolate and butter in the microwave, in thirty-second intervals and stirring in between until it is completely melted and mixed.
  • In a medium mixing bowl, whisk the eggs and sugar until light and fluffy. Add chocolate mixture into the eggs. Add flour and mix until incorporated.
  • Grease 6 cupcake/muffin molds. Fill each about 3/4 full with batter. Then put a generous tablespoon of Nutella in the middle of each.
  • Bake in a pre-heated oven at 350°F or about 10-12 minutes. The cake should be cooked on the sides but still gooey in the center.
  • Remove cakes carefully and turn upside down onto plate. You may need to use a knife gently along the sides of the muffin molds. Serve while warm.

  1. Such a simple recipe..and so ridiculously delicious!! Big hit with the bf…im guessing its going to become a regular now :)) thank u!

  2. Hello, I just want to ask about the type of flour you used! As in, plain, all-purpose..?
These look great btw, I can’t wait to try them for myself 🙂

  3. Hi Kirbie,

Your nutella recipe seems fantastic and i am so tempted to try it!But i have a question? What if i want to make a big nutella lava cake for many people for, let’s say a party?Ok,i will multiply the ingredients accordingly but how this affects the cooking time or the temperature? And where is the best possible option to bake it in?Anything else you want to suggest in that case?Be my guest!

    Thank you!

    • Hi Helen, I would suggest if you are making a lot, you still make them as individual lava cakes baked in ramekins. Because if you try to do a giant one, then most likely the time it takes to cook the cake will be too long and the inside with no longer be like lava. If you do a lot of individual ones, I don’t think the cooking time will change much. It might take slightly longer. Temperature should stay the same too.

  4. could you use chocolate chips instead of chopped chocolate?

  5. Hi Kirbie, can I ask if the sugar used icing sugar or regular sugar..?

  6. I love Nutella and I love lava cakes. Something tells me I should try this…

    • I really enjoy these. And the nutella doesnt get lost into the recipe since it’s just a big blog of gooey nutella in the middle.
