“Nutella Chip” Cookies

These cookies are made with Nutella chocolate chips for a rich chocolate and hazelnut flavor throughout the cookies. They’re like chocolate chip cookies but with a Nutella twist.

No these are not the Nutella chocolate chip cookies that I’ve made several times on this blog. Instead, these are “Nutella chip” cookies. The cookies are made with homemade Nutella chips to ensure a fudgy Nutella flavor throughout the cookies.

Nutella cookies are a favorite at our house. With my other cookies, I stir Nutella into the dough and it gives cookies a fudgy texture. But, the flavor sometimes gets lost or is very light.

So, I’ve been trying to figure out how to make the Nutella flavor more apparent. I’ve tried swirling the Nutella, adding more Nutella, etc. Each change wasn’t to my satisfaction. Then the other day I had an “aha moment.” I was actually reading a post about making homemade matcha chocolate chips. And then I remembered reading a post a while back about homemade Nutella chips.

They are like chocolate chips, but pure Nutella and they are a great way to get a rich Nutella flavor into cookies. They’re fun to make, too.

For this recipe, you will need to make Nutella chips. It’s not hard, but it takes some time to pipe them once you’ve made the mixture.

All you do is melt butter with Nutella in a double boiled on the stove. You need the butter so once the mixture cools, it will firm up and hold its shape after you pipe it.

Use a small piping tip to make little chocolate chips. I recommend piping them onto a baking sheet lined with wax paper. This will make it easier to remove the chips.

Once you’ve piped the Nutella chips, place the baking sheet in the freezer. They don’t hold well at room temperature so, once they’re frozen, you can transfer them to a bag and keep them in the freezer until you’re ready to use them.

The original recipe has you add chocolate to make them more stable but I left it out because it takes away from the Nutella flavor. You can read more about how to make them on Ivory Hut.

Recipe Steps

In a medium bowl, whisk the flour, baking soda, and salt. In a separate bowl, cream the butter, sugar, and brown sugar. Add the eggs and vanilla and mix until combined.

With the mixer on low speed, add the flour and mix until combined. Mix in the Nutella and then stir in the frozen Nutella chips.

Shape the dough into one-inch balls and place them on a prepared baking sheet one inch apart.

Bake the cookies for eight to ten minutes at 375°F. Transfer the cookies to a wire rack to cool.

The chips worked great in these cookies. Pockets of Nutella were spread throughout each one. If you love Nutella you should definitely give them a try. You can easily make a big batch of the chips and keep them in the freezer so they’re already made when you want to make a batch of cookies.

  • Add in the flour mixture on low speed until combined. Then add in the nutella and mix until Nutella is incorporated. Using a large spoon, mix in the nutella chips.
  • Scoop dough and roll between your palms to shape into 1 inch balls and drop onto baking sheets about 1 inch apart.
  • Bake for about 8-10 minutes. Remove cookies from tray and let them cool on wire racks.

  1. I love this idea! I’ve tried cookies where the nutella was mixed into the batter and they were just meh. Like you said, couldn’t really taste the nutella much. But this I love! I’ve got to try it.

  2. Smart, very smart! I bet the cookies are amazing!

  3. Oh what a cool idea! I haven’t had nutella in ages (speaking of which, have you tried any good nutella crepes recently?).

And omg, the homemade matcha chocolate chips, sounds awesome too! Are you going to be doing a post on that cookie anytime soon?

    • I am definitely doing the matcha chocolate chips! Haven’t had time yet but it’s on my must list.
Sorry no good nutella crepes lately. I don’t think I’ve had a crepe in a while. Now I want one. lol.
