Mashed Potato Chicks

For the winter season, I wanted to make some cute looking mashed potatoes shaped like snowmen. I got the idea from Foodilicious, who recently brought snowmen-shaped potatoes to a blogger potluck I attended. I thought they were so adorable.

My family loves mashed potatoes. Though I have to confess, I often use instant packages because I don’t like all the manual labor needed to make my own. So for my “snowmen” mashed potatoes, I used instant ones. I used small pieces of cheese for the nose. And I tried my hardest to find something savory for the eyes, but I couldn’t come up with anything other than black sesame but I wanted big adorable eyes.  So I ended up using some mini chocolate chips. A little bit of chocolate didn’t affect the potatoes in my opinion.

Of course, when I finished decorating, my creation looked nothing like snowmen. And with the slightly yellow color from the garlic mashed potatoes, they looked like chicks. So I decided to pass them off as chicks instead.

Either way, I think they are so adorable and fun to eat. And super easy to make. Just roll some mashed potatoes into balls, make the bottom ball bigger than the top, add something for eyes and nose and you are set. A perfect cute treat to bring to a potluck.

These little mashed potato chicks are a fun way to serve mashed potatoes.

  • Make instant mashed potatoes according to instructions on package. Once cooled, roll mashed potatoes in balls. Make balls of two sizes, a large size for base, and a smaller size for the head. When finished, stack the balls to form the chicks.

  1. How about black peppercorns for the eyes?

  2. So cute! I had a hard time eating the snowman at the potluck, too. Oh well, cute food is meant to be eaten.

  3. These are so adorable! I don’t think I’d ever be able to bring myself to eat one though!

  4. Are you kidding me!? These are SO adorable! I am pretty amazed at how you got potatoes to roll into balls–do you use less water? Either way, these are just too cute (but not cute enough to resist EATING)!

Also… Don’t ask me why I’m up at this hour. Heaven knows. :]

    • Heehee, you commented so fast! Actually the mashed potatoes rolled right up. I thought the mashed potatoes might be too watery, but they weren’t. I used Betty Crocker’s instant mashed potatoes and followed instructions exactly. I always thought they were more watery, but when I touched them they were really easy to roll.
