Kirbie's Cravings

Redd

At the end of last year, we visited Napa Valley and had a really nice lunch at Redd. I never got around to posting about it until now.

On my previous trips to Napa Valley, Redd always seemed to be buzzing with business, so I put it on my to-do list. I became even more interested when I found out they offer a tasting menu. My mom had strongly been hinting that she wanted to experience the tasting menu meals she’s read about on the blog, so this was the perfect opportunity to take her.

One unique thing about their tasting menu is that it is served in pairs. So instead of a 5 course tasting menu, you technically get to taste 10 dishes– as long as your pair is willing to share.

First Course

Yellowfin tuna tartare, asian pear, chili oil, fried rice, cilantro

Sashimi of hamachi, sticky rice, edamame, lime ginger sauce

From this pairing, I preferred the hamachi. The sashimi was quite fresh and light.

Second Course

Patrole Sole, creamy jasmine rice, clams, chorizo, saffron curry nage

Caramelized diver scallops, cauliflower puree, almonds, golden raisins

From this second course, I preferred the sole. It was a hearty dish, perfect for winter. The scallops were a tad on the small side and a little too salty.

Pork Belly Steamed Buns

As often happens with tasting menus, this was a bonus dish, not part of the 5 courses. The Asian-style steamed buns were filled with chunks of sweet pork belly.

Third Course

Glazed pork belly, apple puree, burdock, soy caramel

Warm duck confit, lentils, celery salad, mustard vinaigrette

The skin on the duck confit was so thin and crispy. Definitely one of the highlights of the meal.

Fourth Course

Prime new york steak, potato puree, root vegetables, red wine jus

Sonoma lamb loin, braised artichoke, parsnip, spinach, lamb jus

I usually love lamb dishes, but I didn’t care for the flavors of this dish. The olive taste was overwhelming. I preferred the tender steak.

Sorbet cleanser

This was another little bonus, a light cleanser before dessert.

Fifth Course

Chocolate panna cotta, pomegranate gelee, chocolate sable

Persimmon pudding, spice foam, oange vanilla ice cream

It was hard to pick a favorite of these two. I loved the chocolate paired with the tart pomegranate gelee. The persimmon had a very fall feel to it with the cinnamon and nutmeg spices.

Overall,, we had a really nice meal here. Service was attentive and I loved sampling so many dishes. The tasting menu is $60 per person,, which I thought was pretty reasonable for five courses plus two bonus items. A few tables around us ordered off of the regular menu and the portions looked really big and the prices reasonable, so we might try that next time as well. We left pretty stuffed, except for my mom. She was the only one not full, which makes me worried about taking her to other tasting menu meals which usually have even smaller portions.

On our drive to Napa, we even came across a rainbow.

  1. Interesting to see that a lot of their tasting menu dishes are also the same ones that you can order off of their regular menu. Your photos are as beautiful as always! 🙂
