Which Wich?

Which Wich? Superior Sandwiches has been on my to-do list for a few years now. There are a few locations in San Diego, but the only one I knew of was the one in Hillcrest, so I was always too lazy to deal with the parking.

Recently, I noticed that they opened one in near the UTC Mall, in a plaza with plenty of parking lot. So Mr. K and I went to check it out.

Once inside, there are a line of bags, divided into various categories. For each category, there are several specialty sandwiches. For example, if you choose the “chicken” option, there is chicken, pesto chicken, teriyaki chicken, buffalo chicken and chicken cordon bleu. Then there are a ton of customization options. You choose your bag and then there are red markers provided for you to check off what you want: types of cheese, toasted or not toasted bread, veggies, dressings, type of mustard, mayonnaise, etc. I always get really excited when there are a lot of options, but it’s also overwhelming. We spent quite a while trying to figure out what we wanted.

It’s not always a good thing to have so many options. I always seem to end up putting way too many things on my sandwich that don’t necessarily go together.

Pastrami, Toasted Wheat, Swiss Cheese, Bell Peppers, Dijon Mustard, Mayonnaise, Tomatoes, Pickles, Cucumbers, Spinach, Pepper

This was Mr. K’s choice. I liked the perfectly toasted bread. Unfortunately the pastrami was really really salty. I know pastrami is on the salty sideand I still usually love it. But the version at Which Wich was ridiculously salty.

Buffalo Chicken, Toasted White bread, Pesto, Avocado, Provolone Cheese, Spicy Ranch Dressing, Cucumbers, Spinach and Honey Mustard

According to the store, Buffalo Chicken is a fan favorite, so I thought I’d try it out. Unfortunately, the buffalo sauce made the sandwich too moist and soggy. This was one messy sandwich and I wish I had gotten it without the buffalo sauce.

I enjoyed the concept of this restaurant and all the different customization options. Taste-wise, the sandwiches didn’t really impress me. Perhaps I need to work on my sandwich building skills. You also can place your order online if you don’t want to waste too much time in store choosing your sandwich.

  1. I’ve only been to the one near me (less than a mile) 3xs. First visit took 20-25 mins to get our orders, plus they forgot 1 of 2 sandwiches. Other times took 5-10 mins on slow days. I rarely go in for my free B-Day sandwich unless I have that time. The music is so loud they say “what?” more than Stone Cold Steve Austin. In my experience, Jimmy Johns is much faster, though only slightly more accurate with orders and the bread is stiffer so it holds up longer. Which Wich’s No-Rye Reuben, Crab Salad and Wicked are ok, nothing special. Dressing gets them soggy, indeed. NRR holds up a bit longer if toasted but will bring out the saltiness (though, still ok for me). I have yet to try the shakes or cookies.

  2. I’ve been to one in Carlsbad (Forum shopping center) and Carmel Mountain, and they’re opening one in Scripps Ranch. I didn’t know there was one near UTC. My friend raves about Wich Addiction; at first I thought these were the same restaurant but one of us had the name wrong. Have you been there yet?

    • Lol, I often mistaken the two when I hear Wich Addiction. Yes, I’ve been to Wich Addition, shortly after it first opened. I honestly wasn’t too impressed. It was good but nothing stood out and I thought it was a little expensive, so I haven’t been back.

  3. I just saw this weekend there’s one coming soon to Scripps Ranch which is pretty close to me. I signed up for their Vibe Club because I believe you get something free for your birthday (I don’t know what though – but I’ll find out in October). I’ve always liked the concept with the bags and everything, but haven’t visited. Too bad your sandwiches weren’t that awesome – maybe just have to try something simpler? Soggy sandwiches are kinda gross.

    • Yes I hate soggy ones. I love the bag idea. Mm, yeah, I’ll give them another try. Maybe I did have too much going on in mine.
