Toscanini’s Ice Cream (World’s Best Ice Cream?)

During my trip last Fall to Boston, my brother took us to Toscanini’s Ice Cream, which makes quite a bold claim on their storefront window. They quote the New York Times as once proclaiming them “The World’s Best Ice Cream.”

Well with such a statement, we had to check it out.

The first thing I noticed were the prices. At $4.25 for a small single scoop, this was one of the most expensive ice cream shops I’ve been to.

Burnt Caramel Ice Cream

This is one of their most popular flavors. The ice cream was lusciously rich and creamy, but also extremely sweet. All of us had a hard time eating more than a few bites without drinking copious amounts of water or coffee to wash down the sugar.

Affogato

Mr. K ordered an affogato. This was his first experience with affogato and now he orders it whenever he sees it offered. The single shot of espresso was poured onto his vanilla ice cream., creating a bittersweet drink-like dessert.

Hazelnut

Again, we loved the texture but found it cloyingly sweet after only a few bites. Not wanting to let it go to waste, we ended up dumping the rest of the espresso from Mr. K’s affogato in order to balance it out.

Overall, we had mixed feelings about this place. It was definitely some of the creamiest ice creams I’ve tasted, but I also found it to be too sweet for my liking and on the expensive side.

  1. Holy cow… that is REALLY expensive. I’d just want to share one scoop at that price. Too bad it was overly sweet. Maybe they’ll let you sample a bunch on a future visit? Sigh, I want to go back to Boston. So many new things since I was last there!

    • I was wondering if you had been here before. Yeah, super expensive and it’s not like a huge oversized single scoop either.

  2. Alas–this place is near and dear to my heart because of all the memories from undergrad. Some of their fruit- and tea-based are much less sweet!

    • Ah, I wish i had time to try some of the fruit and tea based ones. Maybe next time! My brother is there for grad school for four years

  3. Oh man, Toscanini’s! We used to go here all the time in college. One of my friends actually worked there for a while. You’re right though – tasty but pricey!

  4. Wow, $4.25 a scoop? That’s outrageous!

Mr. K should try the affogato at Caffe Calabria! I normally don’t like mixing hot with cold, but somehow, it really works!
