Kirbie's Cravings

Lucha Libre Taco Shop

Lucha Libre is a popular taco shop in San Diego and has even been featured on shows like Man v. Food.

My parents requested something distinctly San Diegan during their visit, so of course California burritos popped in my mind and one of my favorite places to get a California burrito these days is Lucha Libre.

The colorfully decorated shop is constantly busy, offering an array of burritos, tacos, quesadillas and hot dogs.

I especially love that the food comes with complimentary chips and salsa. The chips are thick-cut, crunchy, and warm– my ideal characteristics for a tortilla chip. The free salsa bar comes with 9 different varieties. My favorites are the spinach dip, verde salsa, and mango salsa.

Surfin’ California Burrito

While Lucha Libre offers a classic California burrito, the standout is definitely their Surfin’ California burrito, which is a surf and turf variation on the classic California burrito. It’s packed with carne asada, fries, avocado, shrimp and their secret creamy chipotle sauce. I love the addition of plump shrimp to the burrito and the chipotle sauce brings all the ingredients together. I do wish the fries were crisper though, as they basically just taste like potatoes.

Surf and Turf Burrito

This is similar to the Surfin burrito except it has rice instead of fries.

Undefeated Seafood Grilled Shrimp Burrito

For a lighter fare, we also ordered the seafood burrito which is served with fresh cabbage, black beans and cheese.

Holy Moly

Mr. K chose to try this chicken and mole combination. I found it a little too sweet for my liking.

Overall, we had a good lunch here. The burritos were quite filling and tasty, though they seemed a little smaller than before. The complimentary chips and salsa was as delicious as always. If you’re a fan of the California burrito, this place is definitely worth a visit.

  1. Love Lucha Libre, especially its Surfin’ California burrito! The Champion Fries/Nachos are also pretty tasty. The Gold Booth is fun! You can wear their masks if you wanted to, haha. They’ll come to you for orders and bring everything out to you in giant containers. The soda and chips come in huge goblet things and they’ll give you all the salsas. They’ll supply nice looking utensils as well, lol. You also get to sign a little book at the end of the meal! A reservation (at least 24 hours in advance) is required though. Definitely try it out next time you go cause it’s pretty darn cool. 🙂

    • thanks for all the info on the golden booth! I have friends visiting soon who really want to go to Lucha Libre, so I’m going to reserve it when they come!

  2. Can’t believe I have not been here yet! Ever since it was featured on MVF, I want to try the Surfin’ California burrito with that cilantro sauce! Oh, my stomach just growled. Wow, had no idea they have lots of salsa/sauces with their complimentary chips – that’s a PLUS! Thanks for sharing, Kirbie!

  3. Have you ever sat in the Champion’s Booth? It’s pretty fun! We haven’t been here in awhile, it was just okay on our last visit but maybe we need to give it another shot. I do like the salsas though.

  4. Mmmm, this is my favorite Mexican restaurant in San Diego!! I loooove the salsa bar.

  5. Is the Holy Moly a new item? It looks interesting (maybe b/c it looks saucy and less dry to me). I don’t like their chips all that much but I would do endless cartwheels for their creamy cilantro salsa.

  6. I like Lucha, its not traditional Mexican food but tasty stuff. Bf usually gets the surfin’ california and I get the surf n turf taco as well as flaco taco (lettuce instead of tortilla). And then we cover everything in their yummy white sauce 🙂

    • My brother was taking off all of the tortilla wrap. I told him he should have just done lettuce instead of tortilla! I really love the surfin burrito here

  7. Recent subscriber so I can find San Diego eateries new to me. Disappointed you don’t include prices, which would help me plan and time my visits.

    • I include pictures of the menu when I can, but sometimes it’s hard to do so. For instance, the menu here was constantly blocked by heads of customers.
