Sweet Tea Mimosas

If you’re looking for a New Year’s Eve drink idea, here is my recipe for Sweet Tea Champagne Cocktails, or Sweet Tea Mimosas, as I like to call them.

When we were in Nashville, one of the local signature drinks was sweet fruit tea. It’s basically the Southern-style sweet tea with fruit juice added, usually orange. We really loved it because it cut back some of that sugary sweetness. This cocktail combines sweet tea, orange juice and champagne. It couldn’t be simpler and it’s tasty and festive looking too.


I hope everyone had a great weekend. We had a really good time with family and friends and even managed to see both sides of the family on Christmas day. I’m not sure if we will attempt it again though because all the stress we had traveling on Christmas day.

On Christmas Eve, Mr. K’s parents came over and I cooked a big dinner for everyone. They stayed through Christmas morning brunch before leaving. Then we headed off to the airport. Because we didn’t anticipate as much traffic at the airport, we didn’t leave as super early as we usually do. Things of course, started going wrong from there.

We were delayed at the parking shuttle services because of a family that had about 10 suitcases to unload and then put onto the shuttle. Once there, luckily security lines were empty and we breezed straight through. Unfortunately, the metal detector indicated something was off when I walked through even though I had emptied my pockets and taken off my jewelry. So they sent me through the x-ray scanner. As we waited for the results, I heard the security guard say “oh dear.” I looked over at the monitor that shows the outline of a body with the spots that are marked as problem spots, and you guys, it was lit up like a Christmas tree! I’ve only see one mark on there when I forgot to take off a bracelet once, but there was literally about 10 different areas of problem spots lit up.

After a thorough patting down they couldn’t find anything and so they let me through. We then proceeded to go to our gate, only to find out that we were supposed to be at the other side of the terminal. All of the San Diego gates are in one area except for two lone ones which are in a separate part of the airport and have a separate security. In the 15 years I’ve lived in San Diego, I’ve never had a flight going back to the Bay Area depart from there, until now. So then we had to go through security again…and this one has more limited equipment so there was an actual line and it took us quite a long time to go through.

We finally made it to our gate. They had already boarded our group so we got on late. I thought this was the end of the story. But it wasn’t. When we finally landed, we rushed outside to meet my parents, but I didn’t see them anywhere. It turns out that while they were waiting at the airport waiting lot, something happened with the car and it refused to start…

We finally did make it home and also even had our traditional Christmas dinner, but I’m not sure if we’ll attempt to go through it again next year…But now Christmas is over and it’s time to think about New Year’s Eve. I have a few cocktail recipes in mind, including this new creation.

Sweet Tea Mimosas


  • 2 oz brewed black tea
  • 2 oz champagne
  • 1 oz orange juice
  • 1 oz simple syrup (or more or less based on taste preference)

* to make your own simple syrup, boil 1 cup water with 1 cup sugar until dissolved


Mix all ingredients in champagne glass. Serve chilled. Garnish with fresh fruit (like raspberries) and mint if desired.
