On Mondays, my mind is always foggy and tired. The only clear thought that runs through my head is the need for coffee. During the week, I start my mornings with a shot of espresso and a little steamed milk using my Nespresso machine. But on weekends and when I go out for coffee, I like to order a latte. I love the oversized mugs, the creamy milk froth and the pretty latte art on top.

I dusted the surface of this cake with some powdered sugar to try to imitate the latte art. This mug cake has a very creamy coffee flavor, much like how a latte is creamy from the steamed milk. To get the creamy milk sensation, I used heavy cream in the batter. It made such a difference and I loved the result!

This creamy coffee mug cake is the perfect quick treat for coffee lovers.

Ingredients

  • 4 tbsp all purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tbsp + 1 tsp granulated white sugar
  • 1/2 tsp espresso powder
  • 2 tbsp low fat milk
  • 2 tbsp heavy cream
  • 1/2 tsp vegetable oil
  • 1/2 tsp water

Instructions

  • Combine all ingredients into a microwave-safe mug, at least 8 oz in size. This makes a small mug cake, so you can use a smaller mug, just make sure it is not less than 8 oz.
  • Mix all ingredients with a mini whisk until batter is smooth. Cook in the microwave at full power for about 1 minute. The surface of the cake should look done. Let cake cool a few minutes before eating.

  1. can i make this without heavy cream??

    • it works best with heavy cream because of the fat content in heavy cream as well as the flavor. if you use regular milk, you won’t taste milk in the cake and it is designed to taste like a latte which has a lot of milk

  2. Heavy cream is really expensive and hard to find in our country. Would it be okay to use all-purpose cream?

    • I am unfamiliar with all purpose cream. I don’t think you’ll be able to do a direct substitute because I’m guessing the fat content is not the same so you would have to change other ingredients in the recipe as well.

  3. When I first started reading this I thought it was from a café or restaurant then I saw you made it and there was a recipe. YES! I love coffee and this looks delectable 🙂
