Mama Testa Taqueria

photo of the outside of Mama Testa TaqueriaMama Testa, known for beating Bobby Flay on the Food Network’s Throwdown! with Bobby Flay, relocated its restaurant to Mira Mesa late last year. We never were able to make it to the original location in Hillcrest, but I’m glad they re-opened and we were finally able to pay them a visit.

The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating and offers an extensive menu of dishes.

We started our meal with complimentary chips. They have a huge salsa bar with about a dozen different salsas and other various pickles which you can help yourself to.

We started with their famous fish tacos. Two golden battered catfish fillets were stuffed inside crunchy taco shells and topped with cole slaw and queso fresco. We really enjoyed these tacos. The catfish was moist, flaky, with a light batter. The taco shells added an additional crunchy texture that paired well with the fish and toppings.

We also created a trio plate of soft tacos. We loved that we were able to mix and match so we could try more than just one kind of taco. close-up photo of YucatecosMy favorite of the three was the Yucatecos, made with Cochinita Pibil, a Yucatán-style pork. The flavors were bold and slightly sweet.

Overall, we had a nice first visit here. This seems like a great place to hang out with friends for a relaxing meal and they also have lunch specials and happy hour during the week.

  1. I liked the Yucatecos as well. The fish tacos look delicious. What did you think of the prices? We went during lunch but thought the prices were kinda high.

    • I did think the prices were a little high, but the quality was good and I think the price point is also encompassing the sit down service and all the salsas
