The Melt

The Melt, a San Francisco based fast-casual eatery specializing in burgers and grilled cheese sandwiches, recently opened its first San Diego location. It’s located next to Philz Coffee in The Shops at La Jolla Village plaza.

Once inside, you can choose from ordering at the counter or at one of their self-order kiosks.

Since this was our first time trying out The Melt, we decided to try their original Meltburger. The Melt is known for their melted cheese creations and this burger was just dripping with gooey, melted cheese.

The burger meat is made of a combination of angus & wagyu beef, resulting in a soft and moist patty. The burger is also filled with chopped jalapeños and pickles. I thought the jalapeños and pickles added a good amount of flavor to the burger but found the burger patty a little under-seasoned.

It was a decent burger but not particularly memorable.

We also ordered one of their grilled cheese sandwiches. This one is filled with macaroni and cheese, smoked bacon and crispy onions.

I thought the sandwich could have used more bacon. The cheese overwhelmed and I felt it needed some other flavors.

The fries were served with a thick cheese sauce and topped with bacon and more cheese. We found them quite enjoyable.

Overall, we had an okay experience at The Melt. Everything we had tasted fine but not great. We’ll stop in again if we’re in the area to try out some other menu items, but it’s not a place that would make my regular rotation.
