Every year I look forward to the summer county fair and all the deep fried foods that are offered. One thing we almost always get are fried Oreos. It occurred to me the other day that fried Oreos aren’t actually very hard to make and I didn’t need to wait until the fair to enjoy them. Making homemade fair food is really fun and it’s usually less expensive, too.
The fried Oreos I’ve had at the fair are always dipped in pancake batter. So I basically did the same thing. I took a pack of Oreos, some pancake batter, and fried them in a pan. They came out quite pretty. They weren’t quite sweet enough on their own, but a dusting of powdered sugar solves that problem.
I couldn’t believe how easy these were to make. Like my Chocolate Covered Bacon, another one of my homemade fair treats, these homemade fried Oreos are so much cheaper than getting them at the fair. I thought this version was good enough that I’m going to cross that off on my list of fair foods for next summer.
Homemade Fried Oreos
- 10 Oreos
- 1 cup Bisquick pancake mix
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 egg
- powdered sugar for dusting
- In a small bowl, mix Bisquick, milk and egg. Stir until combined with a few lumps remaining. Batter should be thick.
- Add oil in a pan deep enough for frying. Add oil until you have about 1 inch of oil, and heat to a medium high.
- Once the oil is hot, dip an Oreo into the pancake batter, turning on both sides until the oreo is fully coated (try to hold oreo on the very tips of your fingers so that as much of the oreo is covered and your fingers don't get in the way).
- Place the oreo into the hot oil and cook for about 30 seconds -1 min on each side until golden brown on both sides. Repeat with remaining Oreos. Sprinkle powdered sugar on top before serving.
