Fruit Cones

six waffle cones filled with fresh fruit on a serving plate

These fruit cones are like mini cornucopias and are perfect for a party.

This weekend we had some friends over for a house party and one of the items I served were these mini fruit cornucopias. I had the idea pinned on my “party ideas” Pinterest board for over a year and am happy I finally got to use it.

I had a busy, but really, really fun weekend. I had some good friends over for a party, I met and spoke with Anthony Bourdain … you know, the usual stuff. 😉 (I will tell you more about the latter in the future. I saw him while visiting the set of ABC’s The Taste, but I can’t share or say anything more beyond that for now.)

When we bought our house, I had so many visions of finally having a place where we could have friends over and I could test out all these party recipe ideas I come across or think of, but to finally see it actually happen has been really exciting. (I confess, I felt a tiny bit like Martha Stewart.)

I really love how these came out and they are easy to put together. One thing I would change for next time is to completely line the inner cone. I had most of it lined with a paper layer to protect the waffle cone from getting soft and soggy from the fruit, but I didn’t want the paper show so I didn’t line the longer edge of the cone. As a result, the part of the cone that wasn’t protected with paper did start to soften from the fruit.

For the waffle cones, I just bought mine at the grocery store to save time. Believe it or not, I actually do own a waffle cone maker. It’s one of the many random splurge purchases which sounded like a great idea at the time, but now I completely regret buying. I mean, how many times can I possibly use a waffle cone maker?

Unfortunately, I cannot find the original site for this inspiration. Every time I click on the photo I pinned, it takes me to a link that does not lead to the source of the photo.

  1. Thanks for the great idea! It’s a nice healthy with a little bit of sweet treat for my kids over Thanksgiving break.

  2. Thanks for the beautiful and healthy dessert option! It’s nice to mix things up, sometimes. 🙂

  3. Those were so beautiful (and delicious too)! Can’t wait to hear about Bourdain! I would have been a tongue tied mess if I met him!

  4. Nice. Didn’t the peaches and nectarines get dark after a while? Is there something we can do to avoid it?

    • I sliced them about an hour before the party so they didn’t get dark. I’m not sure if there are any tricks to avoid them getting dark, but they should be good for a few hours. You can also stick to other fruits like berries, watermelon, grapes, pineapple, melon, etc.

  5. Such a cute idea! I would even be tempted to fill them with pudding or creme with the fruit (though, that would be more like a DIY on the spot thing and wouldn’t be as pretty for presentation).

    • I actually thought about filling the inside with whipped cream before adding the fruit, but I was worried (a) some people might not want cream and (b) that it would soak through the paper and into the cone. but I like the idea of a DIY

  6. A) I wish I had a waffle cone maker

    B) So neat that you got to meet Anthony Bourdain! I remember reading Kitchen Confidential for the first time and being amazed at how crazy/badass restaurant kitchens were. Can’t wait to hear more about where this is going 🙂

  7. These are so cute! Awesome idea – stealing 😀

  8. I hear you on the specialty appliance thing. I have a pizzelle maker (smaller with a different pattern, but pretty similar to a waffle cone maker). It’s been used 4 times in 3 years. My pasta press still hasn’t been used. I finally just donated a few smaller things that I just don’t use. But there’s always something else that I find and want!

    • oh that reminds me. I also have a pasta press I’ve never used. though it was a gift so I didn’t actually buy it. but I do need to use it one of these days!

  9. so sweet.
but … why not lining the cones with chocolate?

    • that is a great idea! a lot of it was just timing. i was cooking for so many people and had several dishes to prepare so I didn’t have the time to make chocolate lined cones.
