4 Ingredient Healthy Banana Oatmeal Bread (No Flour, Refined Sugar or Butter)

This banana oatmeal bread is just 4 ingredients and the batter can easily be mixed in the blender. The bread doesn’t contain any flour, butter or refined sugar. The bread is very moist, full of banana flavor and the oats add a unique texture.

Instead of making my usual banana bread, I’ve been on a quest to make a healthier one. This banana bread doesn’t taste quite the same as your classic quick bread, but it is tasty just the same.

Ingredients

  • Bananas
  • Rolls Oats
  • Eggs
  • Baking Soda

The basic bread recipe is just four ingredients. Of course you can add mix-ins like walnuts, pecans or chocolate chips.

Bread Sweetness

Banana bread is usually very sweet but I wanted to create one that wasn’t because I’ve had so many requests recently for low sugar recipes.  This banana flavored bread is not very sweet on its own.  If you prefer a sweet banana bread you can easily do that by adding some maple syrup to the batter (about 3 tbsp) or adding chocolate chips to the batter.

Texture of Banana Oat Bread

Because this bread doesn’t contain any flour, it is more dense than a quick bread. It’s very moist as well. The ground oats give the bread a little bit of a chewy texture.

Ingredients

  • 3 medium (approx 360 grams) overripe bananas peels removed
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 cups rolled oats
  • 1 tsp baking soda

Optional Ingredients

  • 3 tbsp maple syrup for sweeter bread
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips for sweeter bread and texture
  • 1/3 cup chopped walnuts for texture

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Line an 8 x 4 inch loaf pan with parchment paper.
  • Add bananas, eggs, oats and baking soda into a blender (in that order). If using maple syrup, also add it in at this time. Blend on high speed until you have a smooth batter. It is okay if you can still see the oats, but they should be ground up enough to look like coarse flour. If adding mix-ins like chocolate chips or chopped nuts, stir them into the batter.
  • Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake for about 35-45 minutes or until toothpick inserted comes out mostly clean and when you gently press on the surface of the bread, it bounces back. Let bread cool in pan before slicing. Bread can be eaten as is or toasted. Uneaten bread should be stored in an airtight container in the fridge or freezer.

Notes

  • Slightly adapted from The BakerMama.
  • This bread is not meant to be a sweet bread. If you want a sweet bread, you can either add maple syrup to the batter (about 3 tbsp) or add chocolate chips to the batter.
  • If your bananas are a little larger, the recipe will still work, but your bread will be more moist and more dense.
  • This bread does not have the same texture as classic banana bread. Please see post for more details.
  • I added some chopped walnuts on top for my bread.

  1. I made these into waffles by literally taking the batter and using a waffle iron… but it tasted great!! I loved these! And so did my family!

  2. This is by far the best bread I have ever baked. I use gluten free oats and it is delicious. Many thanks. Some of your other recipes are also fabulous.

  3. I was so surprised how good this was! I added some vanilla, cinnamon, protein powder, and 1/2 cup swerve sweetener. I also added chopped walnuts on top before baking. thanks for the easy recipe!

  4. Worked really well, and tasted amazing

  5. I just made it. So easy and so delicious. I liked it on the sweet side, so I added 2 tablespoons of honey. The bread rises very well and cooked inside. It’s a keeper. Thank you for sharing ?

  6. Hi there was wondering if I can use oat flour instead of blending the rolled oats ?  Thank you

  7. Delicious! I added maple syrup and blended the oats first in food processor and then added all ingredients into a bowl with the oat flour and used a hand blender. I couldnt wait for it to cool! I ate almost a quarter of it! YAY! NO FLOUR IN IT! And the oatmeal is very good for my cholesterol. Thanks for a perfect recipe.

  8. Loved it!!!!

  9. I made this last night as I had some left over bananas and didn’t know what to do with them. This recipe was so easy to do and prepare. I did add a couple of tablespoons of cocoa powder for a chocolate flavour and it worked. Will do this again. Many thanks for your lovely recipes – they are great.

  10. Can you add greek yogurt or milk to this recipe by any chance? Thank you!

  11. How many serving is in 1 whole bread of the “4 INGREDIENT HEALTHY BANANA OATMEAL BREAD”(NO FLOUR, REFINED SUGAR OR BUTTER) . So I can know how many slice I should cut it into base on the calories. Thank you!

  12. Hi ?? How much calories is in the whole healthy banana oatmeal  bread?

    • We have listed the calories per slice in the recipe card. The bread is sliced into 12 slices and each slice is a serving.

  13. Stumbled upon this recipe and decided to give it a try as I’m trying to cut out excessive sugar. Made it and did add three tablespoons of maple syrup and loved it. Very satisfying. However, mine came out about an inch thick. I’m wondering if I did something wrong. Did mix in blender, adding ingredients in order as directed. Any thoughts?

    • Have you checked the expiration date on your baking soda? If it’s expired that can cause the bread to be flat.

  14. Love this Bread, I do add make syrup and walnuts. I can now have a non guilty slice with my coffee!!

  15. I make this bread every single week and have it in the morning with my breakfast instead of regular bread. I also sometimes have it in evening with a cup of herbal tea. Love it. Avoids me from snacking on garbage.
I have made a couple of adjustments as I don’t have a blender. I used to add everything to my NINJA (same as a Bullet) type smoothee blender and the results were always pretty good. But lately I put all the oats in the NINJA and blend them to a fine grind, then I put the oats in a mixing bowl add the 3 ripe bananas, 1 tsp baking soda, 2 eggs and I mix it all together with a hand mixer until the bananas are well blended. The results are perfect every time. I have a really nice size loaf (2+ inches high at the ends and about 3 inches high in middle. My favorite recipe and I am a long time WW member (weight watchers) so the plan I am following has this at 0 pts per serving. Win, win.

    • thank you so much for sharing your experience!

    • Made this after reading your comments. I don’t have food processor either. So I did exactly how you do it. It came out perfect!! Thank you so much for sharing. I hope my 1 year old likes it too :).

  16. This was AMAZING!! Thanks for all your awesome recipes! I will definitely be making this again and again. Now I just have to wait for my bananas to ripen so I can make more!

    • I’m so glad you enjoyed!

    • Mine came out more like a banana pancake/biscuit. I followed the directions as written…. It tastes ok but it’s just flat 1.5″ in height… I did remember to add the baking soda
Definitely does not look like the picture here…

      • Have you checked the expiration date on the baking soda? If it’s old it may not work as well.

  17. This is so good! I used flax eggs in place of real eggs and 1 1/2cups oat flour in place of oats, added cinnamon, nutmeg, and gjnger. It is soooooo good! Thank you!

  18. It was very dry.

  19. Comments very helpful. Trying to find low sugar treats for husband with diabetes 2. Looking forward to trying variations. Thank you simple recipes for busy folk

  20. Is there a substitute for the eggs, or can I use three egg whites instead? Or applesauce?

  21. Excellent! I added cinnamon, nutmeg, swerve, and blueberries. It was great! I also baked it much longer to make it more bready.

  22. I love this banana bread I like to toast it for breakfast delicious without all the sugar and so simple to make. Thank you.

  23. I think you told recipe temp but not sure. I always use my convection oven, so what temp and for how long Pleeease?

    • Sorry I have not tried to make in a convection oven but I used 350F for a regular oven, which is stated in the recipe instructions

  24. Thanks for this great recipe! Love it!
How long does the bread last in an air tight container in the fridge?

  25. Does this bread need to be refrigerated?

  26. I’ll admit my expectations were low with the multiple disclaimers about this not being your ‘typical’ banana bread, but seriously, this is what banana bread should taste like! I have make it twice now, and it is a new favorite that even my kids and husband like. I’ve been trying to reduce sugar and increase fiber, so this totally fit the bill for a quick breakfast or snack. I used 2T maple syrup, and also 1 t vanilla and 1/2 t. Kosher salt. The second time I baked it, I was a little strapped for time and baked it in a 8×8 square pan and that worked great. Thank you for this quick and healthy recipe!

  27. I LOVE this bread! It was so easy!! The bread was so moist and filling and tasty! I added a bit of Irish butter on top of my slice when it was cooled and I had my first piece, Soooo good! I also added some nuts in mine and on the top, it came out looking just like yours!! Which was very exciting!
Thank you so much for this recipe, I will try some of your others ones also! My husband loves his sweets, so he would have liked it a bit sweeter but he said it was still good! I loved it as the recipe as it was……Next time I will had some honey or fig syrup to the recipe for him.
If anyone is looking for a super easy and healthy but tasty recipe this is it!

  28. What type of oats ? Quick cook or regular ?

  29. I have a Vitamix and I’m wondering can I pre-grind the oats into a course flour before mixing everything else? Or do you still recommend using the whole oats with all the other ingredients and blend at the same time?

  30. Am definitely going to try it for my next breakfast thank you

  31. We absolutely love this! Thank you so much for sharing.

  32. Is the parchment paper absolutely necessary?  I on tmind using buttor or oil

    • you can try greasing the pan instead of parchment paper. I find parchment paper ensures the bread will easily pop out without any sticking to the bottom.

  33. I made it and it was delicious. Added walnut , cinnamon and 1/4 cup of almond milk to the blender to get it going. You can add any liquid if your blender get stuck.

  34. I made last night…very easy and delicious. This is a keeper. I was able to use my nutribullet to grind the oats, but blended the eggs, baking soda and bananas by hand. Thank you for this wonderful recipe, perfect with afternoon tea.

  35. Recipe worked well. Love that it’s actually healthy. I’ll use this to meal prep my breakfast. Thank you for sharing!

  36. I’m tempted to add some blueberries, it’s my first banana bread ever, so not sure… would this be a good idea in your opinion? Thanks so much for sharing and taking time to answer all questions!

  37. This was outstanding and so easy to prepare

  38. Thank you for sharing this great idea. It really looks tasty. I dont have any bananas but I have frozen grated zucchini and I think I might try that until I can go out to get bananas. …with lockdown no unnecessary trips. That might be an idea for the person that commented (above) that didn’t care for bananas. I will add cinnamon too. Looking forward to trying it.

  39. What type of oats

  40. This is a great healthy base recipe. Moist and good flavor. I added some vanilla and will probably add a dash of salt next time. Delicious with a smear of almond butter or Nutella.

  41. Loved this Banana Bread, like someone else said I didn’t miss the sugar, currently doing a low calories diet so this great for a treat. Thank you

  42. Looks delicious, but im really impressed how you respond to all the comments, its awesome. And definitely looking forward to go through all your recipes.

    • I hope you check it out and enjoy! I do try my best to respond to all the comments though I can’t always respond to them asap.

  44. I just made this for my family. It was loved by all! Definitely repeating this recipe. Thank you!!

  45. Made this today and turned out great, don’t even miss the sugar. Next one I will add some cinnamon.

  46. Hi, possible to steam it instead of oven? No oven nor microwave…uhhuhhh… ?
If can steam, for how long?

  47. Thank you . it’s so ha rd to find healthy diabetic options

  48. Can I do this recipe into steaming process?

  49. I want to try this very haelthy banana bread. Thank you so much for this recipe.

  50. This looks very good except for one thing-I really don’t like bananas (I know, I know, hahaha) and am wondering what you think re subbing unsweetened applesauce and if so, how much.

Thank you very much for responding.

  51. Can I grind the oats in my blender before mixing it in the food processor?

    • there is no food processor involved.

      • Now you KNOW she was referring to using a food processor instead of a blender, which obviously would work… Not everyone has a blender…so what is this seemingly rude”non-answer” you gave? I also wanted to know this. But wow, never mind.

      • I’m really not sure why you thought my answer was rude. The question asked was if they could use a blender first for the oats and then mix in a food processor. This was not obvious to me that she was asking if she could use a food processor instead of a blender, especially since she indicated she wanted to use both. I found the question confusing and thought she might be asking about a different recipe that needed a food processor (It happens quite often that people ask a question about a completely different recipe and I have a recipe for banana oat muffins that are made in a food processor where the oats are processed first). So I answered the question to the best of my understanding, which is that she doesn’t need to use both because the recipe doesn’t require a food processor.
As for what I think your question was, yes if you don’t have a blender you can mix everything in a food processor.

    • Ok to use egg whites and no yolks? If so, how many?

    • Are these 89 Cal per slice or 89kcal? I read somewhere kcal =1000 calories. I am assuming each slice isn’t 89000 calories but maybe each slice is 890? Just confirming for a friend (wink, wink)

      • kcal is the actual measurement for what we commonly think of as Calories. So yes it is 89 Calories per slice

    • After the first two I grind the oats in the blender (far easier to clean this way) and mix everything together with a hand mixer.

  52. i dont have oven.. can i use steamer instead?..

  53. Good and healthy food.

  54. Excited to find a easy recipe. Going to make this for my break

  55. This looks great! Would Flax eggs work OK?

  56. Looks delicious ?

  57. Thanks Jen l have to try this.
Thanm you for sharing these healthy recipes.

  58. Love this banana bread
