Hydrangea Flower Cupcakes

I’m not very good at decorating cupcakes. It’s something I’ve been trying to work at. Not too long ago I saw these beautiful cupcakes decorated to look like hydrangeas on Glorious Treats. I was enchanted by the flower cupcakes.

Then I learned that these elegant looking cupcake decorations are easy to make. You just need to get the Wilton 2D tip, which pipes out the flowers. And you simply pipe out one flower on top of another. It’s wonderful and if you mess up, you can just add another flower over it.

I made the hydrangeas two colors, which I think make the flowers more defined. I tried using one color at first and I did feel like all the flowers were blending together.

Next time I might add some green leaves. For the cupcake batter I used Dorie Greenspan’s white party cake recipe. For the frosting, I used a whipped cream frosting, adding a few drops of blue food coloring to half the batch and adding red food coloring to the other half and then putting half of each in the piping bag.

I wanted to take photos of the step by step, but I didn’t have anyone around to snap photos when I was making these. After some more practice I’ll do an updated post with more pictures. But you can visit this site for detailed step-by-step photos.

I originally wanted to bring these to Mother’s Day brunch, but ran out of time. I can’t wait until I have another occasion to make these. I was tempted to buy some real hydrangeas to put these next to.

As  a reminder, there’s still time left to enter my Restaurant.com giveaway. Three lucky winners will be given $25 to restaurant.com to spend at any of the participating restaurants nationwide (it’s not limited to San Diego restaurants). Contest will run until midnight PST on Monday May 30, 2011.

  1. Cute! Another time you could try a rose, I think with the same tip, if you start in the middle then do a round swirl, tucking the end under, you’ll get a pretty rose!

    • Thanks for the idea. I actually saw a rose one, but with a different tip on another blog. It seemed really hard. Maybe I will play around with this one and try to do one like yours.

  2. I wish I could decorate cupcakes that looked that cute. The last ones I tried to decorate looked, well…let’s just say “unappealing”

    • Mine are usually not very pretty. You should definitely try this one. It was super easy. If you mess up a flower, you can just put another one on top. You just need the 2d tip from wilton and you’re ready to go!

  3. I love them! These flowers looks beautiful.

    Greetings!

  4. those are so pretty! i love how hydrangeas look. especially the range of colors in their blossoms. we have a hydrangea bush in our back yard and it’s in bloom now, which makes me happy. 🙂

    • I love how they look too! I especially like the purple/blue blooms. When I get a house with a back yard, I’m going to plant some.

  5. so pretty! I didn’t know you could do this with a 2D tip, I’m so going to do this next time I want to try a new frosting technique. maybe this will be the next time I’m baking cupcakes, you’ll never know 😉

  6. So pretty! My wedding cake had piped hydrangea flowers like this on it!

    • I couldn’t believe how easy they were to make! Next time I’ll do blue and purple, with some green leaves and maybe a brown cupcake wrapper so it looks like a potted plant.
