My search for a new late night Mexican spot continued this week with a trip to Rigoberto's. This spot is pretty popular for UCSD students in the area.

After browsing the menu, we ordered 5 rolled tacos and a California burrito.

The rolled tacos were topped with tons of shredded lettuce.

Underneath all the lettuce, there was barely any guacamole.  I thought the rolled tacos were a bit dry and I didn't like the lack of guac. It is probably the first disappointing rolled taco experience I've had.

The California burrito was also missing some condiments. There was tons of carne asade and french fries, but that is all there was. No salsa, sour cream, guacamole. Also the meat was slathered in this burrito/taco sauce which is normally given on the side. I don't usually put the sauce in my burrito, so I didn't like that here I didn't even have that option since the meat was slathered with the sauce already.

This was a disappointing experience. I had high hopes for this place too. Oh well.

  1. I’m glad you like the format! There’s a few other things I want to fiddle with, but I’m not very tech savvy, so it might take me a while. Yeah, this was pretty disappointing spot, but it is close to UCSD.

  2. hey, i love the new format of the blog! it looks so clean. i agree w/ runner about the pollo asada fries…those are pretty good. but you’re right about the rest…not the best meat quality but one of the closest options for late night for ucsd students.

  3. It’s actually pretty common in SD. Almost every Mexican joint has a California burrito on the menu and it’s always something with potatoes. Some just put big chunks of potatoes, but most places do fries. It tastes really good!

  4. I thought about the fries, but they sounded so greasy late at night..not that the other dishes are that much better.

  5. Hi Faye- I’m glad you like the new format. I’ve been wanting to change it for a while to make it look cleaner. There’s also quite a few other changes I want to make to make it more user friendly, but typepad is pretty limited in what I can do. Thinking of switching to wordpress, but I’m not very tech savvy, so we’ll see.
Hope all is well with you too.
I feel the same way you do about this place. It is so popular but I was pretty underwhelmed.

  6. Carne asada and french fries in a burrito?? Whoa! Now, that’s a first! Hmm, I think I like my burritos a little more traditional, even if I can never resist a good french fry.

  7. We go here sometimes late late night. I love the assortment of salsas to add to your food, which is pretty impressive though. The food is like other mexican joints. I would say try the pollo asado fries..

  8. Hi Kirbie! Nice new blog format!
My friends swear by this Mexican place. This is their ‘go-to’ late night location. I didn’t like it all that much though. The only thing that was awesome was their fresh fried chips (that you have to order and pay for).
    Hope all is well!
