Soft Sugar Cookies

If you’ve been looking for a soft sugar cookie recipe you should give this recipe a try. The sugar cookies are soft and chewy and great for decorating. Plus, they are easy to make.

There’s a lot of sugar cookie recipes out there, but I don’t often see soft sugar cookies. We like soft cookies, so when I found a recipe I was excited to try it.

These cookies are easy to make and decorate and are soft and chewy all the way through. I love soft chocolate chip cookies and pumpkin cookies, so I’m happy to have a soft sugar cookie recipe now.

The cookies came out perfect. I wasn’t sure how I wanted to decorate them. I did some with nonpareils and some with sanding sugar.  I like the look of the nonpareils the best. Next time I might try some regular sprinkles or the little Christmas trees or gingerbread men sprinkles I had.

This is BF’s favorite cookie recipe so, of course, I made him some cookies to take home for Christmas.

Ingredients

  • Granulated sugar
  • All-purpose flour
  • Baking powder
  • Salt
  • Softened unsalted butter
  • Vanilla extract
  • Eggs
  • Sprinkles for decoration

How to Make Them

Whisk the sugar, flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the vanilla and egg and mix until well combined.

Add the dry ingredients to the wet ones and stir until combined. Chill the dough for at least one hour.

Roll one tablespoon of dough into a ball. Dip the top of the ball in the sprinkles and place it on a baking sheet. Repeat with the rest of the dough.

Bake the cookies for 10 to 12 minutes. Cool them for a few minutes on the baking sheet before transferring to a baking rack.

Decoration Ideas

I like to keep my sugar cookies simple with just some sprinkles as decoration, but there are many ways to dress these cookies up. Here are some ideas:

  • Ice the cookies with royal frosting. Royal frosting is a mixture of water, powdered sugar and meringue powder. It’s the type of frosting that’s used for intricately frosted cookies because it hardens when it dries. It’s also often used to assemble and decorate gingerbread houses.
  • You can also use buttercream frosting.
  • To make things really easy, you can always buy prepared frosting in the baking aisle.
  • You can always use different kinds of sprinkles and sanding sugar.

Storage Tips

The cookies will keep well in an airtight container for several days at room temperature. If you store decorated cookies, I recommend layering them with wax paper so the decorations stay nice.

You don’t need to wait until Christmas to make these soft sugar cookies – you can decorate them to match the holiday. We loved the soft texture and I’ll definitely be making them again.

  1. Hi, sorry, is a tablespoon for the vanilla the right amount?
