Cute Turtle Breads

I don’t like to have too much time to pass without making something cute. I was making some hokkaido milk bread this weekend with a new recipe which I’ll post on later. The bread recipe called for a loaf pan size bigger what I had. So I made my loaf and with the extra bread I decided to make some cute figures, like these turtles. Really though, you can use any bread recipe and save some leftovers to make turtle breads.

I love turtles so I try to make turtle-shaped baked goods whenever possible. Despite having made turtle cookies, turtle pretzel rolls, turtle steamed buns, I realized I haven’t tried to make turtle breads yet. So here are my turtle breads.

I was pretty pleased with how they turned out. For the eyes, I used a black edible decorating pen. I bought these CK  Black Food Decorator Pens and love them. They are easy to use and a time saver for decorating faces on baked goods.

I love how easy it is to make turtles. Just take one big round lump for the shell, four smaller ones for the feet, a small circle for the head, and then I usually pinch a thin part of the dough the opposite end of the shell to create a tail.  Draw in two eyes and you are presented with an adorable image. I thought they looked a lot like the baby sea turtles swimming to sea after hatching on the beach.

  1. I LOVE TURTLES TOOOO!!!!!

  2. I love turtles too and these are adorable! But no tail picture?

  3. So. Adorable. I will definitely be making either these or your pretzels when I go home next week. My sister loves turtles.

  4. My daughter is fascinated with animals. One animal she loves most are turtles, she has a turtle stuffed toy, a turtle squeaky toy that she brings to the tub with her rubber duckie, turtle slippers, and a very big marine turtle poster, not the cartoon type of poster but a real picture, at that. I bet she would love to make these turtle breads too. I am not sure if she wants to eat them though. She has 2 live Chinese turtles swimming in our aquarium. They are her friends…I’d have to make just usual bread shapes for eating and turtle shapes for crative kitchen bonding (and I would perhaps do the eating part!)
    Great post! Thanks for sharing!

    • I love turtles too and I have those same ones as pets! I’m sure this would be a fun project. I didn’t think to take step by step photos, but it’s pretty easy to put together. It’s probably one of the easiest animal shapes to make.

  5. These are too adorable to eat!

  6. These are so adorable! I love them.

  7. OMG these are the cutest thing I’ve ever seen!!! I’m gonna have to try this soon 🙂

  8. These are precious! What a neat idea 🙂

  9. Heehee, these are so cute! If you stand up the little things and then put the legs in front and head on top, they would look like little bears or something.
