Kirbie's Cravings

Waterbar

Waterbar is a restaurant and bar that opened recently, offering beautiful ocean views from its prime spot on the boardwalk in Pacific Beach.

I was recently invited in to try out the new restaurant.
Exterior of Waterbar
We were fortunate enough to be seated at a booth next to the window which had a gorgeous view of the water. Unfortunately, our visit was before daylight saving time so it was already quite dark when we arrived. I definitely want to revisit now that the sun sets later.

We started our meal with two of their craft cocktails.

Thetis’ Love features Tanqueray, lemon, basil water, house blackberry-balsamic reduction. Viking Skeid features Ketel One, spiced pear liqueur, lime, Angostura, and ginger beer.

Charred Octopus
Ajo blanco, green grapes, cilantro, almond

This was our favorite dish of the night. The charred octopus was wonderfully prepared, both tender and meaty, with a nice smoky flavor throughout.

Whitefish Ceviche
Citrus, cucumber, onion, aguachile verde

The ceviche was light and refreshing, served with warm tortilla chips. It was a solid appetizer to nibble on though we both preferred the octopus.

Rockfish
Coconut rice, shiitake, almond, lemongrass, basil, bay shrimp

The almond crusted rockfish was flaky and tender but the highlight of the dish was the coconut rice. The creamy rice was aromatic and subtlety sweet from the coconut flavor. I loved every bite of it and I’ll be trying to recreate the coconut rice at home soon.

UK Fish & Chips
Beer-battered local sea bass, ancho remoulade, salt ‘n vinegar fries
Fish and Chips from Waterbar
The fish was nicely fried in a thick, crunchy batter. Mr. K really appreciated that the vinegar flavor was present on both the fish and the fries. It was one of the most enjoyable fish & chips we’ve had since our trip to London a few years ago.

Overall, we enjoyed our food and drinks. The restaurant was quite crowded and a little loud during our visit, but it was also a Saturday night. I do think it is a good option for a casual meal and drinks with a nice ocean view. Next time, I plan on visiting earlier in the day to fully enjoy the beach.

Please note, as stated above, we were invited to check out this restaurant and our meal was complimentary. All opinions expressed are my own.
