Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C). Grease the interior of 6 inch round one-piece cake pan and line the bottom with parchment paper. Do not use a springform pan or a pan with a removable bottom because the applesauce will leak through.
In a large mixing bowl, add applesauce and oats. Stir until ingredients are evenly combined and the oats are fully coated with applesauce.
Pour batter into cake pan. Bake for about 35-40 minutes or until done. When done, the surface of the cake should look dry and the edges should be browned. Remove cake from the cake pan and let it cool before slicing. Any leftover cake should be stored in the fridge.
Notes
If desired, you can add fresh apple slices on top of the cake for decoration. Press them on top before baking. If you do use fresh apple topping on top, the cake will take a little longer to bake because of the added moisture from the apple slices. I needed another 5-10 minutes when I baked the cake with the apple slices on top.
This cake is lightly sweetened if you use sweetened applesauce. I think it is sweet enough but if you prefer sweeter, you can add sugar or a sugar free sweetener to the batter before baking (2-4 tbsp). How much to add really is up to personal preference. You can taste and adjust as needed.
This cake can also be made with unsweetened applesauce but you should add a sweetener if you are using unsweetened.
