Fish shaped ice cream sandwich

The other day Ranch 99 had these cute fish shaped ice cream waffle sandwiches on sale.  I’ve never seen them before, and had to try them out.  I love eating cutesy foods.  The outside is a fish-shaped waffle shell.  The inside has a layer of vanilla ice cream and a layer of red bean.

The Melona brand is a Korean brand. I usually buy their melon bars, but this is the first time I’ve seen these cute fish shaped ice cream sandwiches.  They were pretty tasty.  Not too sweet.

I got these at the Ranch 99 in San Diego, but there are other Ranch 99 locations, so you can look for them there.  Also if you have any Korean markets near you, you might be able to find them there as well. They are definitely a cute treat.

  1. Actually, the design is originally from Japan. Taiyaki is a popular street food with red bean paste inside and fish shaped waffle outside. I guess Korea made a ice cream knock off? (Although I’m not complaining since it looks so good!)

  2. hey!
i’m from the Philippines, and a Korean store near our school sell these cute stuff! it’s really really really really good! it’s not that sweet and it’s a tasty treat and best served fresh from the freezer! and it looks cute! i mean, have you seen an ice cream sandwich shaped like a fish!? 😀

  3. I was thinking the same thing when I saw them. Especially since it has a layer of red bean with the ice cream.

  4. Interesting…they look just like the Japanese red bean desserts (waffle on the outside, red bean on the inside). I’m going to have to see if my local Ranch 99 has them. Looks yummy.

  5. Thanks for letting me know the name. I’d love to try one piping hot. I love cutesy junk!

  6. Cafe Venti has fresh made waffle bowls for your frozen yogurt and has a couple of shaved ice options and coffees. It’s a cute little place in the Convoy area

  7. Hi I found your site through foodgawker. The ice cream is literally called “carp bread”. In Korea, street vendors sell this concoction sans the ice cream and piping hot.
Still tickles my funnybone how amused non-Koreans are about ridiculous Korean junk. 🙂

  8. That is TOO funny! Can’t wait to see your post on it. I forgot to take pics of the waffle w/ nutella so I’m counting on you for that one. My sis didn’t care for the waffle all that much but I thought it was yums.
I’m going to google Cafe Venti right now 🙂

  9. It’s a small, small world. I went to the cafe this past weekend! I saw that it was open, and had to stop inside. I found the menu interesting. I wanted to try a couple of things, but I was in a time crunch. So I only had time to order one thing and had to get it to go. And guess what I ordered? The Belgium waffle with nutella!! I’ll be posting about it later this week and hopefully will do a longer post when I go back and sample their shaved ice and yogurt. This place reminds me a bit of Cafe Venti.

  10. Hi Carol. I need to learn to be quicker. What should be quick shopping trips end up being half-day events because I like to walk around and browse and get all these things I don’t need but look cute or interesting. heehee.

  11. Kirbie! Those look yummy. I agree w/ Carol completely. I’m esp fast at asian supermarkets and need to slow down and see what else is in there!
SOO! I thought about you at lunch today b/c my sis and i found a new place (I emailed Kirk about it already). Remember Red Berry by Nijiya market? It’s now gone and a new Cafe has taken over. AND – they have fresh Belgian Liege (Waffles!!). They’ve only been open 10 days. They have coffees and shaved ice too. I ordered the nutella one – NOT bad, not bad at all – in fact, it was quite yummy. All made to order. So you should take your bf and lil’ brother to try it out. They have green tea shaved ice which i thought you might like.
Anyhow, sorry for the rant. I just saw your waffle fishy dessert and thought HOW IRONIC that i found a waffle cafe place today!
    Hope all is well –

  12. Hi Kirbie! You find the cutest foods at the markets! Me, I just go in and out as quickly as possible when I’m there. Maybe I’ll slow down next time and see what cute foods I can find.

  13. I hope you find it! If you have any Korean markets near you, they might have it there too.

  14. There’s a Ranch 99 next to where I live. I’ll be looking for this delicious treat ;o)
