Kirbie's Cravings

Rakiraki

We recently revisited Rakiraki. The menu has expanded quite dramatically since it first opened about a year and a half ago. On this latest visit, we noticed that they also redid their actual physical menu.

It’s no longer pages haphazardly stapled together to include all the new editions. Instead, the menu is now in a shiny silver binder and the menu pages are filled with pretty food photos.

Spicy Tuna with Crispy Rice

One of the new menu items is the spicy tuna with crispy rice. I adore crispy rice so I really wanted to try this out. Unfortunately, we were disappointed. Only the bottom of the rice was pan fried and crisp– the rest of the rice was still soft. They probably should have made the rice layer thinner. The tuna also wasn’t very good quality. Mr. K usually loves spicy tuna and didn’t want to finish it.

Original Tsukemen

Every time I’ve visited the last few months, I’m drawn in by the new offerings, but so far I’ve left wishing I just stuck to the one dish that I really enjoy, the original tsukemen, which has been around since the beginning.

Thick-cut noodles are served on the side with a concentrated broth. You then dip the noodles in the broth before eating them. Usually the noodles are served cold. I’ve never understood why that is as it makes the broth cool down way too quickly. However, Rakiraki actually serves the noodles hot, so you can leisurely dip your noodles in the broth without worrying that the broth is going to be cold halfway through your meal.

The tsukemen was as good as always. It’s the best version of tsukemen I’ve had in San Diego and our favorite item to get here. While I’m glad to see them continuing to come up with new menu creations, I wish they were as well-executed as their original ones. You can view the full menu here.

  1. So sad the tuna crispy things weren’t good, by their description and the picture they look like a fantastic combination!
