Nobu (Restaurant Week Preview)

San Diego Restaurant Week is just a few days away (September 20-27). I’m so glad they started including weekends as it gives me a lot more time to take advantage of restaurant week and explore new places. I already spent quite a lot of time checking out all the menus and have my places picked out and reserved, but if you’re looking for ideas, I was invited to visit Nobu last week to preview their restaurant week menu.

Located in the heart of the Gaslamp, Nobu is a place we can always count on for a hip atmosphere and quality sushi. For restaurant week, they are offering two menu options, which are served family style to the entire table. We chose Option 1.

Tuna Tataki with Valdivia Farm Green Tomato

This was a light and refreshing start to our meal. I especially enjoyed the crisp green tomato slices underneath the tuna and the ginger soy dressing.

Soft-Shell Crab with Pickled Watermelon

The crispy fried soft shell crab was paired with cubes of pickled watermelon and finished with a sweet ponzu sauce. It was one of my favorites of the night.

Chilean Seabass Umami-zuke

Seabass is such a naturally rich fish, and the broiled pieces were moist and flaky. I did feel like the seasoning needed to be upped a tad and the broiled tomatoes were a little too tart for my liking.

Chef’s Choice Sushi Roll

For the chef’s choice roll, we were given an option of salmon, tuna, and yellowtail. I opted for the yellowtail and Mr. K chose the tuna. Despite the simplicity, these rolls were quite good. Sometimes you’ll see the undesirable cuts of fish used for these rolls at other sushi places, but the tuna and yellowtail nearly melted in my mouth and I basically inhaled my share within minutes.

BANANA SOY TOBAN-YAKI

We were given three dessert choices. I went with the caramelized bananas, roasted pecans and gelato. This was like a fancy, warm banana split sundae.

ARAGUANI CHOCOLATE & MANDARIN CREAM

I didn’t write down the name of the other dessert we chose, but looking through their regular menu, I believe I have the right name. I enjoyed the contrast of the light cream and the rich chocolate ice cream.

Overall, we had a really great time here. Whether you like Nobu or have been wanting to check it out, the restaurant week promotion is a nice opportunity to do so. You can check out their restaurant week menu here.

Please note, as indicated above, we were invited to this preview meal by San Diego Restaurant Week and our meal was complimentary. All opinions in this post remain my own.

  1. I’m glad you and Mr. K ate here and took these gorgeous pictures. I’ve always been curious what a SDRW meal would be like here. Was it enough food? My eyes are sometimes bigger than my stomach!

    • yes it was enough food. We were actually discussing it the other day and I like that it was just the right amount. We didn’t leave overstuffed or not able to finish, but we also didn’t leave hungry.
