We recently went on a Coronado Walking Tour with Bite San Diego. Bite San Diego offers food tours for various parts of San Diego. I love going on food tours whether it’s in my own city or in cities we’re visiting. We’ve done a few Bite tours in the past, so when we were invited to check them out again, I was happy to take them up on the offer.
The website provides a list of places for each tour, an estimated amount of time and distance walked. After a lot of research, Coronado seemed the most appealing to me because even though I’ve lived in San Diego for so long now, I haven’t really explored Coronado all that much and my knowledge of food spots in Coronado is pretty limited. When we do visit, it’s usually just to see the beaches and the famous hotel.
The weather was absolutely gorgeous the day of our tour. Our tour started at Coronado Ferry Landing, which I’ve never even been to before in all the times I’ve been to Coronado. Our guide, much like all our past Bite tour experiences, was bubbly, friendly, full of enthusiasm, and just made everyone feel so comfortable. I really admire people who are tour guides. I don’t think it’s something I could handle. Our group had a good mix of people visiting from out-of-town and locals, like us, who just love food and wanted to get to know Coronado a little better.
Candelas
Our first stop was at Candelas, which had a beautiful view of the water. We sampled a carnitas taco and warm cheese soup. The cheese soup was a big hit at our table. It was quite rich and creamy and reminded me of drinking cheese dip in soup form.
At each stop,we had about 20 minutes to eat and mingle and order drinks if we were so inclined.
Peohe’s
Our second stop was Peohe’s, which is one of the few restaurants I know of in Coronado and have been wanting to visit, but haven’t had a chance to. Browsing through the menu, I definitely do want to return. Here, we sampled some coconut crunchy shrimp served with a sweet chili sauce. The shrimp were light, crunchy, and tropical. It was one of my favorite bites of the tour.
Tartine
Our next stop was Tartine, which was my favorite new find on the tour and one I will be circling back to soon. I would have done so after the tour if I didn’t already have plans. This cozy, European bistro serves up some delicious looking pastries, sandwiches and more.
For the tour group, we were served one of the chef’s special creations. Sour cream grits with a bolognese-like sauce, pickles, and fresh herbs. The description seemed like a hodge podge of mismatched ingredients, and yet it somehow all worked and was wonderfully warm and comforting. It seemed to be the best bite for a lot of the people in my tour group.
Coronado Taste of Oils
At this boutique shop, we were able to browse, shop and taste fresh olive oils, flavored balsamic vinegars and more. We were also served Neapolitan ice cream topped with strawberry balsamic amaretto.
Clayton’s Coffee Shop & Mexican Takeout Window
Located next to the old school diner was a take-out section serving Mexican food. We sampled some a carne asada taco and an acai smoothie.
Nado Gelato by Bottega Italiana
Our final bite was at Nado Gelato, which I have been to a few times previously.
Overall, this was a very fun way to spend the afternoon. It was a good amount of food and a good amount of walking to walk off all that food. We explored parts of the island I had never been to before and I learned quite a lot about Coronado. I’d definitely recommend Bite Tours to visitors who want to do a food tour while visiting San Diego and to residents who just want to play tourist for the day.
