A while back I read this great article entitled “I ate L.A.”  It was a fun read, and I enjoyed reading about some of my favorite spots from when I used to go to LA a lot more often.  When the article started talking about Stan’s Donuts, I was surprised.  Stan’s Donuts is in Westwood.  During college, I used to visit Westwood all the time with my friends at UCLA.  I thought we had covered every place possible in Westwood, but I’d never been to or heard of Stan’s.  I’m not sure how I missed it.  So I put Stan’s on my list of places to go to next time I’m in the area.

Fast forward to the present. I finally got a chance to check out Stan’s Donuts!

When I first entered, I was overwhelmed with all the donut offerings.  In addition to the traditional flavors, there was also a large variety of flavors I haven’t seen before.

I oohed and ahhed over the display for a while trying to choose my selection. Unfortunately for me, the famous Stan was not around.  Instead, I got a lady who did not seem at all happy to be working there and was even less happy with my indecision.  It wasn’t like I was holding up the line.  I was standing to the side and the store was empty.

Finally, I decided on my selection.  Boyfriend ordered an old fashioned buttermilk.

You could definitely taste the buttermilk. Yum!

I also got a glazed twist.

Glazed donuts and twisted glazed donuts are my favorite donut so I couldn’t resist trying Stan’s version.  It was very doughy.  Much doughier than other donut places I’ve been to, but I really liked it that way. I like my doughnuts to be more doughy.  I did think it was slightly on the pricey side though because it was more than a $1 for each donut.

Then Boyfriend and I each ordered one of the special donuts.

I chose the peanut butter banana donut.  It’s apparently very popular and contains peanut butter and fresh bananas.

Unfortunately for me, there were no bananas in my donut! None at all.  Here’s an overexposed shot showing only peanut butter.

Needless to say, I was quite disappointed.

Boyfriend ordered a blueberry something.  I no longer remember what it was.

I’m not crazy about blueberry in my donuts.  I don’t know why.  I usually love blueberries in my food.  The blueberry taste here didn’t make me hate the donut though.  But I also didn’t love it.

Overall, I think their traditional donuts at Stan’s are quite tasty and I would get them often if they were closer to me.  I was disappointed by their specialty donuts, but maybe next time I’ll try some others.

Service: 2/5

Taste: 3.5/5

  4. I like old fashions too. It’s my favorite after glazed. I don’t usually like the filling ones as much, but Boyfriend loves them. I wish I had better experience with the specialty ones, but in general the donuts were still better than the average donut shop. I’ll try some other specialty ones next time.

  5. I didn’t eat it until we had left the area. Or else I probably would have gone back and asked for one with bananas! I’ve seen quite a few posts by other bloggers that make me want to go and drive to LA or wherever right this minute. hehe. the hazards of reading food blogs.

  6. Old fashions are my favorites, then the cream/custard filled ones. Too bad the specialty donuts weren’t that good you. I hate when that happens.

  7. I almost *cringe* reading your blogs in the mornings b/c i just KNOW it’ll make my stomach growl for whatever you just posted 🙂
That pb banana donut looks AMAZING. I don’t really like donuts but that one makes me wanna drive to LA and buy a dozen. That sucks that there weren’t any bananas! You should have given the 1/2 eaten donut back to that mean lady and demanded a refund…j/k (kinda)!
