One of the meals I was most looking forward to eating during my trip to Nashville was breakfast. Grits, sausage, biscuits and gravy, I wanted to try it all.
Puckett’s was highly recommended, so on my last morning in Nashville, we went there for a hearty breakfast.
Sweet Tea and Sweet Fruit Tea
Sweet tea is a common drink in the South. While I enjoy it, it’s a little too much for me. I feel like I’m drinking pure simple syrup. Nashville though, specializes in sweet fruit tea, where the sweet tea is mixed with a fruit juice, usually orange, pineapple or lemon. I believe Puckett’s version was orange juice. These acidic and tart juices help to balance out the sweetness and I enjoyed it more than regular sweet tea.
The Early Riser
This was my choice. One of the things I really fell in love with in Nashville is breakfast grits. I’ve never really enjoyed grits in San Diego. I find them to be too mushy and too bland. But in Nashville, I had a few versions of breakfast grits, and despite its simple flavors, I really love them. They taste so comforting and I can imagine eating them every day for breakfast.
The grits are a little coarse, rather than complete mush. There is a subtle taste of corn, mixed with a little butter. I already ordered a bag of grits from Amazon so that I can start making them at home.
Texas Two Step
Brisket hash with peppers and onions, served with a side of home fries and a cornbread waffle. It’s topped with a fried egg. This was hearty, full of flavor, and we utterly enjoyed this one as well.
We really enjoyed our breakfasts here. The staff was also really friendly, constantly checking on us, refilling our teas. They even topped off our teas and gave to-go cups.

Everything you had looked so good, especially the brisket hash. I have only tried grits once (at {Pine State Biscuits in Portland, OR) and liked it. I would probably like that sweet tea! 🙂
I was surprised how much I liked grits. The breakfast ones are so simple that it seems like it might be an acquired taste and something you need to grow up with, but I loved them!
Mmm grits 😀 I also can’t handle sweet tea very well, either – the fruit-infused ones sound much better!
the fruit infused one was a good balance. loved it! Will need to make it at home now. and i’m so excited my bag of grits arrived yesterday!
