These biscuits are a copycat version of the famous Red Lobster Cheddar Bay Biscuits. This easy version needs just 4 ingredients and is such a quick and easy recipe. The biscuits come out soft, tender, cheesy, garlicky and taste just like the ones served at the restaurants.

These biscuits are a quick and easy side dish to make for a weeknight meal or for a larger event. I think it’s even easier than the making the biscuits from the mix. I’ve already made them a few times in the last few weeks and my family really loves them.

Ingredients

  • Self-rising flour
  • Cheddar cheese
  • Garlic herb butter
  • Buttermilk

Self-rising flour: Self-rising flour is all purpose flour that is already premixed with baking powder and salt. I like using self-rising flour because it saves a few extra preparation steps. You can also easily make your own self-rising flour by combining all purpose flour, baking powder and salt.

Cheddar cheese: The biscuits use shredded cheddar cheese. I like using wider shreds so the biscuits have spots of melted cheese throughout.

Garlic herb butter: Garlic herb butter is a butter that already has garlic and herbs added to it. I started using garlic & herb butter for cooking and I love how convenient it is and how much flavor it adds to dishes. I also like using it to make a quick garlic bread. By using garlic herb butter, you save the steps of having to finely chop herbs and garlic for these biscuits. Just melt the butter and add it in.

Buttermilk: Buttermilk gives these biscuits their tender, moist and rich flavor.

How to Make Copycat Red Lobster Cheddar Bay Biscuits

  • The biscuit batter takes less than 5 minutes to prepare. The flour and cheese are first mixed together.
  • The melted butter and buttermilk are also mixed together in a separate bowl.
  • The wet ingredients are then poured into the flour mixture and mixed until just combined.
  • Use an ice cream scoop to scoop and drop the biscuits onto your prepared baking sheet.
  • The biscuits are then ready to be baked. When they are out of the oven, I like to brush them with a little more melted butter. You can also garnish with fresh parsley for appearance but it’s really not needed.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups (250 g) self rising flour see note before starting
  • 1 1/2 cups (125 g) shredded cheddar cheese
  • 8 tbsp (113g) melted garlic butter plus additional for brushing
  • 1 cup (8 fl oz/237 ml) lowfat buttermilk

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large mixing bowl, add the flour and shredded cheese to a large mixing bowl whisk together until cheese is evenly incorporated into the flour.
  • In a separate bowl, mix together the buttermilk and 8 tablespoons (113 g) of melted garlic butter. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix with a spatula until just combined.
  • Using an ice cream scoop (with about 1/4 cup capacity), scoop and release the biscuit mixture onto your prepared baking sheet, spacing the biscuits about 2 inches apart.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for about 15 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown on top. While biscuits are baking you can melt an additional 2 tbsp of garlic herb butter to brush on the biscuits when they are done baking. The biscuits will still taste great even without the additional melted butter, so it is optional, but it does make them taste even more buttery and rich.
  • As soon as the biscuits come out of the oven, brush them with the the additional melted garlic butter if desired. You can also garnish with finely chopped fresh parsley before serving. Let biscuits cool slightly before enjoying!

Notes

  • Self-rising flour amount. There are 2 main kinds of self-rising flour sold in the US. One that is a lower protein (2 grams per 1/4 cup serving) flour and one that has a regular amount of protein (3 grams per 1/4 cup (30g) serving). The amount of protein affects how much liquid is absorbed. For this recipe, I tested it with Gold Medal self-rising flour* (regular amount of protein). Please use a self-rising flour with a regular amount of protein (3 grams per 1/4 cup), or make your own self-rising flour with the recipe below.

  • Homemade self-rising flour: Whisk together 2 cup all purpose flour, 3 tsp baking powder and 1/2 tsp salt. Make sure your all purpose flour has a regular amount of protein (3 grams per 1/4 cup). Most brands in the US contain this amount but there are some brands with higher protein (4 grams per 1/4 cup) such as King Arthur Flour and Bob's Red Mill. You do not want a high protein flour for these biscuits.
  • I used Kerrygold Garlic & Herb butter.

  1. This recipe looks amazing. We only use almond milk . Will that be OK to use in this recipe? If so, should I add a little lemon juice or vinegar?

    • We haven’t tested this recipe with almond milk but you could give it a try by adding 1 tablespoon of an acid like lemon juice or apple cider vinegar to 1 cup of almond milk. Stir and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it thickens slightly and curdles.

  2. Since garlic butter isn’t a ready-made product, what is your recipe? Thank you

    • I’m not sure where you are located, but it is a ready-made product for me and I used Kerrygold Garlic & Herb butter for this recipe

  3. Thanx very much for the recipe! I like it and it’s also fast, doesn’t need lots of things. Only 4 things do the most thanx a lot I’m so impressed.
