Whenever I go to Monterey Park, I always end up making two bakery stops for my egg tarts.  Kee Wah Bakery makes the giant original egg tarts the way they used to be made, with the buttery crust.  However, I'm not a big fan of their Portuguese egg tarts. They are much smaller, and pricier.  Diamond Bakery offers some beautiful large Portuguese egg tarts for a little more than a $1 each.  Luckily the two bakeries are pretty close together so it's not hard to stop off at both.

Portuguese egg tarts are sweeter than traditional chinese egg tarts and have a creme brulee-like surface.  I remember the first time I was introduced to Portuguese egg tarts when I was younger.  I remember being very confused as to why these egg tarts cost more and were so popular.  Why would people want burnt looking egg tarts? Of course, now my culinary palette has expanded and I've learned to appreciate these delicious treats.

Diamond Bakery is very similar to Kee Wah Bakery in terms of the bakery goods it offers.  They are a bit pricier than Kee Wah, so I generally prefer Kee Wah for my chinese breads and cakes.  The only thing that really stands out for me at Diamond are the Portuguese egg tarts.
