Sea Salt Coffee from 85C

A mid-day post! So I’m currently at work drinking mediocre coffee, and wishing I had some sea salt coffee from 85C Bakery and Cafe.  Thus, the inspiration for this mid-day lunch post.  I picked some up last week when I had to be in the Orange County area for work.

While I’ve previously posted a little bit about sea salt coffee in the past, I wanted to expand a bit on my post with pictures.  Sea salt coffee is the hottest selling drink at 85C Bakery and Cafe.  My previous posts on 85C can be found here and here and here.  You can read more about 85C’s sea salt coffee and it’s popularity here.

Basically, sea salt is mixed in the foam of the coffee.  However, when you drink it, you really don’t taste salty foam.  But the sea salted foam really enhances the coffee drink.  I don’t know exactly how to describe it, but it creates a very nice sweet aftertaste in your coffee.  When you first sip the coffee, it tastes like your typical coffee with milk and sugar.  A tiny bit of the bitterness of the coffee, mixed with the creaminess of the milk and just enough sugar so it doesn’t taste like you are drinking black coffee. But the key is the after taste.  There is a very sweet after taste.  Yet it’s not too sweet or artificial tasting.  It’s kind of like the sweetness you would expect if you ordered a really sweet coffee drink like a caramel macchiato or a white mocha, except the coffee isn’t sweet.  Just the after taste.  And without it being overwhelming or artificial tasting.  I don’t know if this description helps.

If you enjoy coffee, I would suggest you try it out if you are in the area.  And definitely pick up breads.  I’m always amazed by reviewers who visited and didn’t try the breads.  The breads are still the best part of 85C for me, but now I found their coffee addicting as well.

  3. Hi Carolyn- Yes, probably adding sea salt to black coffee won’t work..unless maybe it’s just in a coffee foam put on top of the coffee?

  4. What a great touch to add sea salt to coffee! I drink my coffee black, so I’m guessing the addition of sea salt might not work too well there. But I might just have to try to see what it’s like. 😉
