I often have a craving for brownies so I’m always trying to make healthier brownie recipes to satisfy my cravings. These brownies are rich, fudgy, moist and chocolatey. The batter takes only about five minutes to make and then they are ready to go in the oven.

Bananas: The brownies are naturally sweetened with bananas. This recipe works best with very ripe bananas, which taste sweeter and are more liquidy.
Peanut Butter: This recipe uses unsweetened natural peanut butter which helps provide structure for the brownies and adds flavor. You can also make these with natural almond butter. If you need a nut-free substitute, you can try sunflower seed butter.
Unsweetened cocoa powder: This recipe uses dutch process cocoa powder to provide the chocolate flavor.
How to Make Healthy Banana Brownies
The bananas are first pureed and then blended with the peanut butter and cocoa powder until a smooth batter forms. The batter is then ready to be poured into a baking pan and baked. Once cooled, the brownies are ready to be cut and served.
Healthy Banana Brownies Texture and Sweetness
These brownies are not your typical brownie made with flour. They don’t have a crumb and they aren’t chewy or cakey. Instead, they are very moist, rich andy fudgy.
The brownies are also not that sweet because they don’t contain any added sugar. I think they are just sweet enough from the bananas but they are not going to be as sweet as typical brownies. If you want to make them sweeter, you can add frosting on top like the ones I used on these brownies or add some sweetener on top.

- 1 1/2 cups (377 g) pureed bananas
- 1/2 cup (128 g) unsweetened natural peanut butter
- 5 tbsp (35 g) unsweetened dutch process cocoa powder
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C). Line an 8 x 8 inch baking pan with parchment paper.
- In a food processor or blender, add pureed bananas, peanut butter and cocoa powder and blend until smooth.
- Pour batter into the prepared pan. Bake for about 20-25 minutes. The brownie batter should look puffy and the surface should not be wet. The batter should not be jiggly but when you touch the surface, it should still feel very soft and not quite set. Let brownies cool completely before cutting and eating.

- If you have a scale, you can weigh the bananas and then add them to blender or food processor to puree them. If you don't have a scale, puree four bananas, then measure out 1 1/2 cups for the recipe.
- You can also make this recipe without a food processor or blender, but you will need to make sure you finely mash the bananas until they have a puree consistency (I recommend using a whisk instead of a fork).
- The brownies do not have your typical brownie texture. They are very fudgy and moist. The brownies are also not very sweet as they have no added sugar. You can always add a sweet frosting or sweetener on top if you want to make your brownies taste sweeter.
- I have only tested this with dutch process cocoa powder. I think natural unsweetened cocoa powder should work but I have not had a chance to test to make sure it works.

Can I use frozen bananas for this recipe ?
We have not tested this recipe with frozen bananas but we do know this recipe works best with very ripe bananas, which taste sweeter! Frozen bananas may be too liquidy.

These are delicious and super easy to make. Do you think you could use pumpkin puree instead of banana and just add a bit of maple syrup for sweetness?

Can I use peanut butter powder (mixed with water)
instead of natural peanut butter?
We haven’t tried PB powder, so can’t say how that will work – if you try it, try to mix it with water so it’s the same consistency as natural peanut butter. The recipe may not turn out right if it’s thicker or thinner.
How do you make the brownies more cake-like?
These brownies are meant to be fudgy and rich – making them cakey would require additional ingredients, so we don’t have a good suggestion for you. Sorry!
