Current Cravings- Trader Joe’s December Items

Another Trader Joe’s Fearless Flyer came in my mailbox, which of course meant another trip to get some featured items.

I’m quite proud that I showed more self-control than usual. Mostly because I’ve been spending much more than normal due to the holidays. But I did pick up a few items I wanted to share.

Cheddar Chocolate Cheese

I actually first heard about this cheese from my friend CC when she tried it the first time they had it available. She alerted me right away that Trader Joe’s had it again even before the flyer came out, but I didn’t get a chance to visit Trader Joe’s until now.

According to their flyer, Trader Joe’s originally introduced this limited item for Valentine’s Day and now have decided to bring it back for this holiday season.

It’s a mild cheddar cheese with actual thin chocolate curls mixed inside. The taste was quite interesting. It has the sharpness of the cheddar followed by a very light sweetness. At first, I couldn’t quite taste the chocolate. I just tasted something sweet in the cheese. It took me a few bites to adjust to the flavor, but I liked it.

Italian Truffle Cheese

DH and I love anything with truffle. We had some truffle cheese during one of our fancy meals that included a cheese station and really enjoyed it so I was really excited to see it being offered at Trader Joe’s for a pretty reasonable price.

There’s little pieces of black truffle embedded in the cheese and the truffle aroma is pretty strong throughout as well. Yum.

Pecan Pie Ice Cream

I love that TJ’s ice creams are always super premium (at least 16% butterfat), making it extra creamy and rich. My first thought when I had this was that it tasted like regular pecan ice cream. Then a few days later, I had some pecan pie and when I went back to this ice cream, I realized that the ice cream does taste like pecan pie and not just regular pecan ice cream.

The pecans are sweetened and taste just like the syrup pecans used in the pie. There are also swirls of brown sugar, molasses and shortbread, creating a pecan pie effect.

So that’s all for now. I also spotted the candy cane macarons but I’ve not a big fan of candy canes so I didn’t end up getting any. Hope everyone has a great rest of the weekend!

How funny! They were just giving out samples of that chocolate cheddar cheese at my local TJ’s…I didn’t like the taste (reminded me of soy sauce for some strange reason) but hey, more for you I guess ;)

My husband didn’t like it either. My first few bites, I wasn’t sure how I felt. I thought it was a little weird. But after I got used to the strange taste I liked it.

My hairsytlist gave me a piece either at the end of last year or earlier this year. When I tried looking for it, it was gone. I assumed it was seasonal because I could never find it. I enjoyed the cheese with fruit slices and Medjool dates. My husband and daughter didn’t like the cheese.

Yeah DH didn’t like the cheese at all because of the sweetness. It took me some time to get used to, but I ended up liking it once my taste buds adjusted. Thanks for letting me know about it!

I LOVE the truffle cheese since I discovered it last summer. I even brought back a block to Taipei. You should also give the TJ spotlight cheese a try- cinco lanzas. I tried a little and was hooked. Strong flavor but very piquant.

Kirbie, you would LOVE this shop I went to in Seattle by Pike’s Place Market. It’s called La Buona Tavola and they have just about every truffle item you can imagine. You also get to sample most of their offerings too! I ended up purchasing a 3 pack of black truffle oil, white truffle oil, and black truffle salt (10%) truffle for a really great price. I swear I was in heaven. Plus the prices are so competitive! I’ll be blogging about this shop in my Seattle vacation post (which I hope will be soon). :)

That does sound like something I would like! I wish I knew about it when i went to Seattle two years ago. Hmm, I’ll definitely keep it in mind when I visit again as I do plan on going back to Seattle at some point.
