Thick Nutella Hot Chocolate (European-Style)

This is a twist on traditional European-style, thick hot chocolate, adding the delicious Nutella flavor to the drink. It’s the perfect winter holiday drink.

I am in full holiday mode. We started putting up our tree this weekend. We didn’t actually finish, but at least it’s up and now we just need to finish the decorations. We also found a radio station that plays Christmas music all day, so we’ve been listening to festive holiday tunes all weekend long too.

One of the reasons we haven’t completed decorating the tree is because I forgot how strict Mr. K is with how it needs to be put up. It’s strange because as far as any other house decorating or related decisions, he couldn’t care less. But he will not let me even help set up our fake tree with thousands of branches because he claims I’m doing it wrong. He slowly and meticulously spreads out each of the branches and then steps back, examines it, goes back to readjust, etc. Meanwhile, I’m just impatiently waiting to put on the ornaments.

When I decorate, I always require Christmas music and hot chocolate. Lately, I’ve been obsessed with European style hot chocolate. I love how thick, rich, and decadent it is. I learned how to make it when I was making my Spanish churros con chocolate. So I decided to combine this new love, with my previous go-to hot chocolate, my Nutella hot chocolate. And I created a thick, European-style Nutella hot chocolate.

It’s really, really good.

Thick Nutella Hot Chocolate

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups milk
  • 4 oz Nutella spread (weighed)
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch

Directions:

1. Reserve 4 tbsp milk and pour the rest into a small pot. Add in Nutella spread. Turn stove to medium  heat and stir constantly until Nutella is completely dissolved in the milk.

2. In a small bowl, add cornstarch and remaining milk until cornstarch is fully dissolved. Add mixture to the pot on the stove, stirring constantly until hot chocolate thickens. Turn off stove and serve while chocolate is still warm.

  10. This looks amazing also do you have maybe the measurement of Nutella in tablespoons or something? I don’t have a scale anymore

  11. I just made this–wow, so thick and delicious. I used another recipe for reference and ended up using about 4 1/2 to 5 tablespoons of Nutella and even added extra milk at the end because it was so thick. I put some in my bae’s thermos for his commute to a late shift and I’m going to drink the rest and wrap some presents. Heavenly!
