Myung In Dumplings

Myung In Dumplings recently opened in San Diego.

It’s a popular Los Angeles based chain, even earning a visit from Anthony Bourdain, and specializes in handmade Chinese-Korean dumplings. A reader, Lilly, actually tipped me off about this spot, and given my love for dumplings, I went to check it out the very next day (Thanks Lilly!).

Meals come with complimentary cold barley tea and a trio of banchan dishes.

King Steamed Dumpling (wang man du)

Of course, we had to order their signature king steamed buns. These oversized buns came out white as snow, fluffy as a cloud, and brimming with ground pork, chives and glass noodles. Each one barely fit into the palm of my hand and this really brought me back to my childhood.

Boiled dumplings with shrimp, pork and vegetables

We also tried out the classic boiled dumplings. The skins were thin but held together well. I wished they had a little more texture and chew, but that’s just a personal preference. The filling though, was quite enjoyable. I love that they didn’t skimp on the ingredients, with plenty of chopped chives and shrimp in each bite.

Fried Dumplings with pork, shrimp and vegetables

We also ordered pan fried dumplings. I didn’t enjoy these as much. They were greasy and would have benefited from more time in the pan as the skin wasn’t as crispy as it should be.

Overall, we enjoyed our dumplings here. While I didn’t think these were as good as my favorite dumpling places in the Los Angeles area, I did feel like these were solid homemade dumplings that remind me of the ones I ate growing up. I also think this is a pretty good option for those craving dumplings in San Diego.

    • i know, right? it’s about time. now if only more LA places would think about coming here..I’m sure they’d do well. Look at the line at 85c everyday

  4. I saw this place and was so excited. But I went in and didn’t see much on the menu that I wanted to try. Was it a sit down service or order at cashier type of thing?

    • Sit down service. They specialize in dumplings, so the menu is dumplings and some noodle soups. You can see my menu pic. it’s not a huge menu, but I think it’s fine if you are just craving dumplings

  5. Hey Kirbie – I’ve been a here a couple of times. They are pretty good, probably better than naything else in San Diego
