Avocado is one of my favorite foods. If it wasn’t for the little fact that avocados are very high in fat and too much isn’t good for you, I’d eat avocado with every meal.
I’d eat it with my cereal, I’d put it in my sandwiches and salads. I love it plain, in drinks, as ice cream, in guacamole and deep fried.
As a member of Foodbuzz, I sometimes get an opportunity to sample products. Recently, I was chosen to receive a box of avocados from the California Avocado Commission.
The box arrived, with five large avocados packed inside. I was also given some magnets and an avocado scooper.
After playing around with some recipe ideas, I decided to make some avocado fries. I ate deep fried avocados for the first time at the San Diego County Fair a few years back. They tasted amazing, especially dipped in Ranch dressing. I had been wary of the idea at first but I thought deep frying them really worked.
I first got the idea of making my own avocado fries from Adventures in Cooking. To put my own spin on it, I decided to coat the outside with breadcrumbs and with bacon bits, another throwback to the fair since fair food often revolves around bacon or fried food.
The fries were pretty easy to make and came out nice. The bacon added a little saltiness to the fries which paired nicely with the blander taste of avocado. Some of the coating didn’t stay on avocado fries. I think it was the bacon causing some of the breadcrumb coating to fall off, but it still tasted great and I like seeing the bright green peeking through.
Since making these I’ve also made avocado fries without bacon which are so delicious and crispy, too.
Avocado Bacon Fries
Ingredients
- 2 large avocados cut into 6-8 slices lengthwise (for each avocado)
- canola oil for frying
- 2 cups Italian breadcrumbs
- 4 strips of bacon cooked and cut into very small pieces
- 1 egg beaten
- 1 cup of flour
Instructions
- Separate flour, egg and Italian breadcrumbs into three bowls. Add bacon pieces to breadcrumb bowl.
- Using a sauce pan or wok, pour in enough oil for frying (about 1 1/2 inches deep) and turn stove to medium heat.
- Take one slice of avocado, and coat it in the egg mixture. Then coat it in the flour mixture and then the breadcrumb mixture. Re-dredge it again in the egg, flour and then breadcrumb mixture. Put the avocado piece in once the oil is hot.
- Cook avocado until the breadcrumb turns golden brown. Make sure to flip the avocado over so that it browns evenly on all sides. Mine took about 30 seconds to one minute for each side.
- Repeat with remaining avocado slices. Serve with ranch dressing for dipping.

OMG, that looks so good!
These look tasty; I’ve had this before but yours look very appetizing & makes me want to make them! I see on this thead a comment from 2011 that you hadn’t tried the Cheesecake Factory avocado rolls yet. I trust you have, by now? Those are in my top 10. The sauce “makes” it.
Unfortunately, no. I still haven’t tried the Cheesecake Factory ones! I havent been back to Cheesecake Factory in a really long time. I need to try this sauce.
I’d also replace the italian breadcrumbs with panko style crumbs. they make everything much lighter and crispier. i can’t wait to try this!!
I’ve done that as well. Love panko, but they don’t look as pretty. haha. I like that it is crunchier though.
Thanks! I just tried them & they were great. I just did two mini changes, one, I used brie cheese instead of bacon, the other, I added a little of garlic to the egg and salt & pepper. The proces of the breadcrumbs, the flour and the egg is a little bit messy, so it needs organization, but the result was really nice!
I’m really curious as to how brie cheese would taste with avocado. Sounds delicious!
do you think that if I opted to bake rather than fry, would I end up with the same result?
I don’t think it will be crispy. But it should work.
Wow these look amazing and fun. I’d love to get some free avocados! Sounds delicious.
Avos WITH bacon. Words escape me… Oh, and do try the avo rolls at Cheesecake Factory. They come with a tamarind dipping sauce that’s also DELISH!
Oh I love tamarind flavor. Mmm, now I want to got Cheesecake factory just to get these rolls.
haha, i was going to say fair food too! it also reminds me of the avocado rolls at cheesecake factory which are also very tasty!
I’ve never had avocado rolls at cheesecake factory. Now I’m intrigued.
OMG Kirbie. I was laughing when I saw this b/c we went to the Fair last night and everyone thought the deep fried avo sounded terrible (but then the remembered I wanted to try deep fried butter so they quieted down).
Your recipe looks amazing! Can you explain the taste? My friend last night said she thought it was just TOO rich, too buttery, *too* much. But then again, it’s fair food so I think their recipe is always heavily battered and weighed down.
I remember reading your recent chicken wing post. And remembered (?) that it said wings were fried in olive oil (or maybe someone commented on it). I recently did some deep fry experimenting and used EVOO and it actually turned out really nicely. What’s your opinion on this?
We tried a bunch of stuff last night at the fair. Hopefully I’ll write about it soon!? (PS – I chickened out of the deep fried butter…it cost like $5.75!).
Hmm, the fried avocados at the fair have always been one of my favorites and one of the few deep fried fair foods I actually enjoy. I didn’t think it was too rich or too buttery unless you dip it in the pesto sauce which is oily. I guess in general the batter used by Chicken Charlie’s is pretty rich, but I don’t believe they add anything else to the avos to make them more buttery. i think they just taste like warm, soft avocados with some deep fried batter mixed in. My version doesn’t have all the batter, just some breadcrumbs, so it is a lot lighter than the fair version.
I don’t do a lot of frying and haven’t tried frying with EVOO but I would imagine it is healthier and possibly tastes better too. I like the taste olive oil adds to foods.
Aww, too bad about the fried butter. I was really curious!
Faye, count yourself lucky, after eating the deep-fried butter my stomach wasn’t up to eating the deep-fried s’more, which was what I really wanted… If your curious, the DF butter tasted like a really buttery churro (without the cinnamon and sugar).
Finally someone has tried it! I never wanted to try it, but I was curious as to what it tastes like. Thanks for giving us the description and the warning!
I spoke to random stranger that Tues night who also tried the DFB! And he said the EXACT same thing as you!! That it tasted like a hot cinnamon churro w/ creamed butter center!!! I kinda frowned and asked ‘should i feel bad that I did not want to pay $5.75 and try it?’ He and his wife looked at me and shook their heads and said ‘nah, it was REALLY buttery, but in kind of a BAD way!!’.
But thanks for letting us all know! Kirbie and I were both really curious about it!
Ps- i saw the deep fried smores! We were trying to find the chocolate covered deep fried corn dog but could not, for the life of us, find it.
