A cake with no eggs? It can be done! And it’s delicious. Fluffy, fudgy, chocolatey. This may be one of my favorite mug cake creations yet. It only needs fiveingredients. And unlike the other mug cakes, there’s not gooey outside layer.
After making the two ingredient chocolate coke cake, I realized that it is possible to make a cake without using any eggs. One of the issues I had with the chocolate coke cake was that the crumbs are a little loose making it hard to cut and eat. But if you put it in a mug, you eliminate that problem since you are eating the cake with a spoon.
So I set about making a chocolate coke mug cake. No cake mix this time. Instead I made it from scratch and hoped for the best. And it came out perfect. The cake rose unbelievably high. It almost spilled over my super oversized mug cake and so far any other mug cake I’ve made in this cup usually only rises about halfway. The cake was very fudgy yet also light and airy. It tasted very similar to the chocolate coke cake.
Like the chocolate coke cake, the crumb is loose without the egg. But since it’s in a cup and you are spooning it out, it doesn’t really matter as much.
The outside was dry rather than wet after it finished cooking. It almost looked overcooked, but it wasn’t. This cake was great and so easy to make. I also discovered that you don’t have to use coke. I tried it with Dr. Pepper and got the same result. Normally I hate Dr. Pepper, but you can’t taste it at all in the cake.

Eggless Chocolate Mug Cake
Ingredients
- 4 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 1/2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 4 tbsp sugar
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 7 tbsp coca cola
Instructions
- Mix all ingredients together into an oversized mug. This cake rises a lot so if you don't have a very large mug, I suggest you split the batter into two mugs after mixing. Mix with a small whisk until no lumps remain.
- For one oversized mug, microwave for 1 1/2 minutes. Cake should have a dry surface and knife inserted should come out clean. You may want to reduce the time for two smaller mugs.

I like this, and it doesn’t really crumble at all. ? I reduced the sugar by half and added a bit of rose jam when it was done, yum!
So glad you enjoyed it!
Just made this and put a Lindor truffle in the middle to make before putting it in the microwave a lava mug cake. So good!
Oh, what a great idea! Sounds amazing – thanks for letting us know!
I made this with Cup4Cup gluten free flour, swerve for the sweetener and coke zero – I also added some cinnamon – it was very good and surprisingly moist….
I’m glad it worked out for you!
I LOVE IT!!! I just don’t like eggs this is GREAT!! Turned out PERFECT
so glad you enjoyed!
I made this with caffeine free diet Coke and no cocoa powder. It was the fluffiest thing I’ve ever eaten. Thanks.
nice!
This is the best one ever! Thank you !
=) glad you like it!
What kind of flour can be substituted to make this gluten free?
Sorry, I don’t know. I haven’t tried to make a gluten free version of this before.
Think this would be good with orange pop? Or ginger beer? Plotting….
Hmm, I haven’t really experimented outside of coke and root beer. But it’s so easy, might as well try!
Wow! This was delicious! My only problem was with the cooking time. I had an oversized mug so I cooked mine for 1 1/2 min, but it was still liquid when I pulled it out. I cooked it in total for 4 min, but it was chewy in the end, but still good! Any suggestions on what I did wrong?
It sounds like 4 minutes would be way too long. Did you do it at 30 second intervals after the 1 1/2 minute mark? I’ve never had to microwave more than 2 minutes.
Hey there! Just wanted to let you know that this is a terrific idea! So much so that our junior high school will be doing a community project by putting the recipe together in ziplock bags, decorating the mugs and donating them to a local nursing home!! Thanks so much!!
Oh what a wonderful idea! Thanks for letting me know.
I just made this, using your recipe as a guide, and it was delicious! I was feeling naughty but didn’t want to make a whole cake. I used root beer, which worked really well. I also added a few drops of vanilla and some pumpkin pie spice, since it is the second day of fall (yay!). I really enjoyed it, made in one of my favorite nightmare before christmas giant mugs.
Thanks for the inspiration!
Mm, pumpkin spice seems like a nice touch!
Hello,
First, thank you for trying out all these mug cakes! I have yet to really try any, but it’s fun to see someone has taken the time to put together an entire collection of mug cake recipes. 🙂
Second, do you have any idea how root beer would work in this cake, instead of the coca cola? That’s all I have in the house, and I’d rather not purchase any more pop. Maybe I should just give it a try and let you know how it goes! 🙂 Still, I’d love to hear what you think………hope you have a wonderful day!
I haven’t yet tried it with root beer, but I would guess it would work since I tried it with Dr. Pepper and it worked as well as the coke. If you do try, please let me know. Thanks!
I make this every time I get the craving for chocolate and we have nothing in the house. It is so moist and delicious I can eat it without nay toppings, which I normally never do! It’s amazing.
Yay! I’m so happy to hear your positive review!
I didn’t know that coke can be used this way. I am also allergic to eggs so this is one great way for me to enjoy cakes. Now I’m thinking what to top it with. ;p
Dod you leave out an ingredient by any chance? I tried this recipe but it was incredibly bitter and had a terrible taste.. I thought maybe I forgot sugar but I looked back and it was not on the ingredients list. Is this a mistake?
I’m really sorry. I did leave out the sugar from the recipe by accident! So sorry that I didn’t catch it but thank you for letting me know.
I think I’m gonna try guinness!
Hmm, I don’t think guinness is going to have the same effect as coke if you are planning on substituting one for the other. It is possible to make a guinness chocolate mug cake though. I’ve done it before. https://kirbiecravings.com/2012/03/guinness-chocolate-beer-mug-cakes.html
