Supernatural Sandwiches

Supernatural Sandwiches has received quite a lot of love from the various San Diego media outlets in recent months, with features in Zagat, San Diego Magazine, Eater, Thrillist and more. I’ve been wanting to visit ever since I read mmm-yoso’s post back when they were just a vendor at the San Diego Public Market.

They currently have a brick and mortar shop and are also at the Hillcrest farmer’s market. Until this past Saturday, the brick and mortar location was only open on the weekdays which made it difficult for me to try to visit. But they now are open Saturdays as well and I was there soon after the doors opened.

After waiting so long, I decided we couldn’t just order one sandwich each, so we ended up ordering three plus dessert.

Siren Sandwich (Sautéed Garlic Mexican White Shrimp, Buttery Toasted Bun, Robust Elemental Aioli, Rustic Hex Tomatoes, Shredded White Cheddar, Fiery Necromancer Sauce, Fresh Local Greens)

Of the three, this was definitely my favorite and it is their best seller. The presentation of this one was quite lovely. The shrimp were plump and moist and well-seasoned. We loved the garlic flavor and the aioli. The tomato medley paired well, adding some acid to balance out the sandwich perfectly. The sandwich was served in a toasted brioche bun, which held the ingredients together well.

All sandwiches come with five beautifully fried shrimp chips dusted with a spicy chili powder blend.

Neptune Sandwich (Sautéed Sweet Local Scallops, Crispy Smoked Bacon, Buttery Toasted Bun, Spicy Pyro Aioli, Zesty Enchanted Sauce, Fresh Local Greens)

The description for this sandwich starts with “The Almighty King of Umami!” and one bite in, it is as advertised. Sweet scallops, smoky bacon, spicy aioli– it was just an explosion of flavors. I enjoyed this sandwich a lot, though I liked the Siren a little more because it’s flavors are a little more subdued. The flavor profile for this sandwich was almost a tad too strong.

Nessie Sandwich (Fish of the day, Silky Shinto Glaze, Buttery Toasted Bun, Tasty Shaman Tartar Sauce, Savory Jinx Relish, Fresh Local Greens)

This sandwich was served on brioche toast slices rather than a bun. I don’t think that was the best decision because the bottom piece of toast got quite soggy. The fish of the day was cod. It was fresh and moist, with just some basic salt and pepper seasoning. While I enjoyed this sandwich and thought it was well executed aside from the soggy bread, it really paled in comparison to the other two and it lacked ingredients to make it unique. It seemed like a fish sandwich I could get at other restaurants as well.

Horchata Macaron Ice Cream Sandwich

The macaron sandwiches are provided by Made with Extra Love. It consists of cinnamon flavored macaron shells and horchata ice cream. The flavors were spot-on and I loved the amount of ice cream packed between the macaron shells. This was delicious and I would definitely get it again.

Overall, we had great time here. I’m so excited they are now open Saturdays and hope they continue to do so. We’ll definitely be back to try out the rest of the menu and re-order our favorites.

  2. Wow!  I gotta try that macaron sandwich!  Does the ice cream taste just like a horchata?

  4. Oh, the ice cream sandwiches are new! I’ll have to pop into for another visit just to try that, haha.

  6. Always nice to see a restaurant where what you get when you order looks just like advertised picture. That first looks amazing!!! And anything flavored like horchata I am down for 🙂
