Little Sheep Mongolian Hot Pot, a large restaurant chain specializing in Mongolian hot pot, opened a second San Diego location in Mira Mesa earlier this year.
I’ve always enjoyed the hot pot offered at Little Sheep and was happy to see a second location since the original one tends to be very crowded.
It took me a while to check out this location as I’ve been busy eating at all the individual hot pot places that have popped up in San Diego.
At Little Sheep, you start with a soup base filled with various herbs and spices. You can choose regular broth, spicy or half and half. You then choose from a large selection of ingredients and order the ones you wish to cook and eat.
The broth is very aromatic and flavorful on its own, but they also have dipping sauces for your cooked food too.
It’s always a struggle trying to figure out what to order. I like having a lot of different ingredient in my hot pot but I also don’t want to end up with too much food I can’t finish. We usually do a few of the platters so that we can have more variety.
Here are some of the items we ordered:
Beef & Lamb Combo
We really enjoy the meat here. Most hot pot restaurants serve low quality meat which becomes quite tough when cooked in the broth. Little Sheep offers many prime meat cuts which stay soft and flavorful when dipped in the hot broth.
Vegetable Combo Platter
Tofu Combo Platter
Glass Noodles
House Fish Balls
In addition to raw ingredients for hot pot, they also offer a few prepared dishes like dumplings and skewers. I was in the mood for dumplings, so we decided to try their lamb dumplings.
I didn’t really care for these dumplings. The filling was a little dry and the wrapper was on the gummy side. We’ll just stick to the hot pot next time.
Overall, we enjoyed our hot pot. A meal can get pricey here because you have to order so many individual ingredients, however the quality of the ingredients, especially the meat, is better than a lot of hot pot sets or hot pot buffets. This second location is also not quite as crowded. If you are available for weekday lunch, they do offer a set meal for $11.95, which is quite filling.
