These healthy apple bread rolls are so soft and moist. They are easy to make and don’t require any yeast, white flour, eggs, added sugar, butter or oil. You can have fresh bread in about 30 minutes.
I love making my own bread, especially if it’s an easy recipe. There’s something so delicious about eating fresh bread right after it is baked. These rolls are incredibly soft and just a little sweet. They can be enjoyed on their own or with some butter or other spread.
Ingredients
- Applesauce
- Whole Wheat Flour
- Baking Powder
Applesauce: I used unsweetened applesauce to make these bread rolls. The applesauce provides moisture and flavor and gives these breads a light sweet finish.
Whole Wheat Flour: This bread is made with whole wheat flour. The recipe is designed to work specifically with whole wheat flour. While it can be made with all purpose flour or whole wheat pastry flour, you would need to make some adjustments to the recipe. You can view my 2 Ingredient Apple Bread rolls for a white flour version.
Baking Powder: Baking powder is what helps the bread rise. Make sure to use an aluminum-free baking powder.
How to Make Healthy Apple Bread Rolls
The flour and baking powder are first whisked together. The applesauce is then added until a wet dough forms. The dough is then divided and rolled into balls and then they are ready to be baked.
Apple Bread Rolls Texture and Flavor
These rolls are very soft. Sometimes bread made with whole wheat can be more dense and dry but these are not. They are as soft as bread made with white flour.
The bread rolls don’t taste that much like apples but the applesauce gives the bread flavor, moisture and some natural sweetness. I love that the breads are lightly sweetened but not so sweet to be a sweet bread.
If you want more flavor or texture, you can add some mix-ins like nuts or dried fruit.

3 Ingredient Apple Bread Rolls
Ingredients
- 2 cups (253 g) whole wheat flour
- 1.5 tbsp (18 g) aluminum free baking powder
- 10.5 oz (298 g) unsweetened applesauce
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
- Add flour and baking powder to a large mixing bowl. Whisk until evenly combined.
- Add in the applesauce. Use a spatula to mix in the applesauce until it is completely incorporated into the flour mixture. You may want to use your hands to knead the dough a little towards the end to make sure all the applesauce is mixed in. Your dough should feel very moist. You want the dough to be moist otherwise the bread will come out dry.
- Divide bread into 9 pieces. Roll one piece between your palms to form a smooth ball. Place onto prepared baking mat. Repeat with remaining dough pieces, spacing bread rolls 2 inches apart. I recommend washing your hands in between each ball to prevent the dough from sticking to your hands.
- Bake bread for about 25 minutes or until bread rolls look cooked and tops are lightly golden brown.
Notes
- The 10.5 oz of applesauce refers to the weight. If you don't have a scale, 10.5 oz is approximately 1 cup +3 tbsp (using US measurements).
- This recipe works best with whole wheat flour. I have not tested with gluten-free flour. If using white flour, you will need to reduce the amount of applesauce.
- The bread rolls have a light sweet finish from the applesauce. They are not meant to be sweet bread rolls so they are not that sweet. They can be enjoyed plain or with your favorite spread.
- Store any uneaten bread rolls in an airtight container in the fridge. I recommend reheating leftover rolls before serving.
- Make sure to use aluminum-free baking powder so there is no metallic taste in your bread.
- You want the dough to feel very moist. Because this bread is made with whole wheat flour, it needs a lot more moisture to keep the bread soft.

I made the 3 ingredient Apple rolls…..they are absolutely fantastic, I added some craisins also which was not a bad idea at all. Not much needed, I actually just did some butter on one when it came out the oven. I would definitely try a couple more of these recipes.
Love that you added craisins – sounds so good. We hope you try more recipes soon!
Haven’t made this with whole wheat flour as didn’t have any but when made with plain flour this recipe makes scones not bread…also applesauce works well but crushed pineapples better.
We hope you try it with whole wheat flour!

Very nice recipe chef ???. I put the dough in a piping bag and I use a small baking ring to mould them. Thank you for your effort ???

Super easy directions. These rolls are fantastic! Stumbled upon the recipe on face book. Lucky me. Thank you.
We’re glad you tried them!
Easy and virtuous.
I must admit, I was a bit sceptical when I saw this recipe after previously making someone else’s recipe for Kale bagels, which were awful! Anyway I had all the ingredients so thought I’d give it ago. Well I was really surprised how nice they were! They also got a nod of approval from my husband, so believe me when I say, that is truly a compliment!
My dough was very sticky as you mentioned in your blog, but instead of rolling them in my hands, I just used two spoons & dolloped it on the parchment & patted them into shape. Worked a treat. Thank you so much for this recipe, it was quick & easy. I will definitely be making them again.
Thank you for sharing! I’m so glad they worked out for you and your husband!

Sounds wonderful! Could this be made with Organic Rye flour? I know it would be just a different taste, but would it work?
