Richard Walker’s Pancake House
Richard Walker’s Pancake House recently opened a second location in the heart of La Jolla. I was recently invited to dine at the new location. I’ve passed by the original downtown location many times and it always seems to have an endless line of tourists. I was excited to find out that there would be a second location that would hopefully be a little less crowded.
Apple Pancake
The apple pancake is one of their most famous dishes so we had to order it. I think ours was a little underbaked. It didn’t rise as high as some of the other ones we saw at neighboring tables and it also deflated significantly once it was set down on the table.
Caramelized apples, gooey cinnamon glaze. This reminded me of an apple pie and pancake rolled up into one. It was a little overwhelmingly sweet for me, but I’ve had this issue with all apple pancakes I’ve tried. We were really craving something salty to accompany this.
Dutch Harvest
I really enjoy dutch baby pancakes but am not too fond of the traditional lemon flavor, so I opted to try this savory version of the dutch baby. The souffle-like baked pancake was filled with melted cheese, broccoli and mushrooms. The pancake was fluffy and light and the filling ingredients paired well together. We both enjoyed this entree.
Overall, we had an okay time here. It’s a good place to visit if you have pancakes on your mind but neither dish we had was particularly memorable. This new location was busy, but without a long wait, so if you like Richard Walker’s or want to try it, this is probably the better location to visit.

Have you ever been to The Original Pancake House off of Convoy?I’m partial to this chain, as I grew up in Portland, OR and visited the “original” one many times growing up. Â I love their Dutch Baby pancakes. Â My parents always get one of their apple pancakes. Â Not sure how sweet it is but my dad doesn’t like overly sweet things so it might be a good sweetness for you too. Â There’s normally a wait to be seated if you get there later in the mornings during the weekends.
I have been to The Original Pancake House though I never had their apple pancake though. This place actually reminds me a lot of TOPH. I immediately thought of it when I was looking at the menu.
We went to the one downtown a couple times. Most. Hideous. Service. Ever. It was during the week, so the place was less than half-full. Â The tables were literally butted right against each other, so that if you were seated at the wall, the server had to move the table for you to get in and out. Seating fail. The service was painfully slow. Took 10 min just to get someone to ask us if we wanted coffee. By the time the food bothered to come out, we were both completely over RW’s. It could have been the best in the world, but the service was so awful, the experience was ruined. Â
yikes, that sucks. i know what you mean about bad service ruining your meal.
I’ve never seen a savory dutch pancake before! I kind of like that idea, since usually the apple ones are way too sweet for me.Â
