Rita’s Italian Ice Mira Mesa
Rita’s Italian Ice, the popular chain from the East Coast specializing in Italian ice and custards, has continued to open locations in San Diego.
I read about the opening in Mira Mesa a couple of weeks ago, but wanted to wait a few weeks before trying it out. It was so hot this weekend in San Diego–perfect weather for ice and custard.
The Mira Mesa Rita’s is located in the same plaza as Little Caesar’s Pizza and California Donuts. I’m sorry I don’t have a nice picture of the front. I thought I would have enough time to take a picture on our way out, but it got dark really fast.
The interior looked similar to the other Rita’s I’ve been to. Inside, the menu offers different flavors of ice, custard, and drinks. Rita’s is most famous for their gelati, which has a rich custard soft serve at the bottom, ice in the middle and then topped with more custard.
There were only four people ahead of us and it seemed relatively quiet, but for some reason it took a really long time before it was finally our turn. Twenty minutes later we had our ice orders, only to wait another 10 minutes at the cash register before someone can to ring up our order. I was afraid our ice and ice creams would be melted.

I wasn’t really feeling any of the ice flavors that day and my favorite part is always the custard, so I decided to just get a cup filled with their rich vanilla custard.
Overall, we enjoyed our ice and ice cream, though I didn’t like how long it took us to get our orders. We’ll give this one a few more tries, but with so many others opening, we may go to choose another location for our “go to” store. It was completely dark by the time we left:

I like having more frozen treat options nearby. I want to try one of their custard sandwiches sometime. Did they have weird candy flavors when you went to? I do like the custard more than their ices, actually!
yes! like a starbust one. and some other weird ones. I always look forward to eating the custard more than the ice, so it just seems to make sense to just get the custard. heehee
Whattttt?! This is a Philly staple and I totally remember the first time that I tasted the custard and “wuder” ice combo (as they say it in Philly), I thought the people at Rita’s were NUTSO, but somehow it works!Â
They’ve invaded CA! hopefully they’ll be in SF soon.
They are building not one but TWO Rita’s in Clairemont right now! This place is taking over the west coast! That being said, I am super excited to try it!
I saw! I am eager for the ones in Clairemont to open.
